I went to the U of L External law programme page and the only fees listed for the course were less then 2500 pounds. Is that the full cost or did I miss something?

Any opinions on the firm "Semple Piggot Rochez" online law school representing (apparently) U of L. What is the cost of the progra taking it through them?

University of London only provides course guides, textbooks, past exam. papers and CD Rom for external law programmes and no instruction is given. The fees quoted in the web page of U of Lond. are only for application, registration, course materials and examinations. You have to study independently or take courses provided by some institutions (generally not related to U of Lond.).

    REALLY YAN?

And they award an LL.B degree while providing no instruction? just past materials?

    Does not sound too good.

Is the University of London LL.B. acceptable for licensure as a lawyer in Canada and the United States through the BAR exam?

It is possible to become a member of a provincial law society in Canada & practice with a LLB from U of L External. Please visit the following website www.flsc.ca for specific details. Look under "foreign lawyers".

As far as the US is concerned, I recommend that you check with the individual state bars in which you intend to practice as well as the American Bar Association. These organizations should be able to provide you with the information you require. You might also want to get this in writing from the bar(s) or ABA prior to undertaking a LLB External degree through U of L.

    Good luck!

As mentioned before, there are 50 different bar associations to deal with in the US. In my state (Massachusetts), a foreign lawyer may apply for direct bar admission (w/o taking the exam), but I believe that is more for experienced lawyers, not new law graduates.

    UoL fees

Depending on where you live, you also will have to pay fees to sit the examination. I 'study' BA French with UoL and have to pay to the British Council in Tokyo Yen 20'000 basic fee plus Yen 10'000 for each exam (+ tax). Last year, I sitted 7 exams and had to pay almost 100'000 Yen (770 USD - 550 BPD). This was in addition to the 50 BPD or so that I paid to UoL for each unit (7 exams - Total: 4 units).

You should also budget a certain amount of money for the books you will have to buy (about 300 - 500 BPD a year). Depending on where you live, you may be able to borrow the books at a local library - I can't forget about that and just have to buy all books.

Exams are usually only once a year in May or June. UoL is pretty strict about how many units you must have before passing next level exams. Also - at least in French - there is no choice, at least in the first and second level: all given units are compulsory, I can't skip one if I don't like it. It takes at least 3 years to get a degree.

As some people already informed earlier, UoL provides study guide books containing lists of books and what you have to know in order to pass the exams. It's up to you to see what you need to study or not. Depending on where you live and what you study, you may be able or have to go to a certain school/university.

Exams are tough ... although my mothertongue is French, last year, I failed 3 exams :( (passed 4 :) ).

And about entry requirement: they don't accept just anybody. I had to sit A-Level exam in French to be admitted. I passed with a "A" :) Unnecessary and just costly, but UoL needed a proof of my language proficiency ... allez savoir ...

    H.

(studying for a BA French at UoL and going to register at COSC for another BA - hope to get this one faster with CLEP exams and others)
