Direct Entry to PhD with a BEngg

Hi There

Just wanted to inquire that is it possible in USA to get a direct entry into PhD with a BEngg degree ? How long it takes to complete this sort of programme and are they considered equivalent to standard PhD degrees by the Credential Evaluation Agencies?

I have been recently offered direct entry into PhD programme by a Malaysian university.

The time it takes usually depend on the academic calender (example, 15-week terms, 12-week terms, 8-week sessions, etc), and your course load per term. Considering that master level courses are usually part of such programs, and the fact that U.S. PhD programs usually comprise of course work in addition to the culminating dissertation (that is, american PhDs are not research-only as is the case in Malaysia), it may take 5 to 6 years, or more, to complete a PhD in Engineering that admits at the undergrad level. Mississippi State University, for example, operates their engineering PhD programs with the option of entry with just a bachelor's degree. By the way, which school in Malaysia are you talking about (OUM, Al-Madinah)? Did you earn your BEng from an american university?

 

OUM has stopped accepting International Students from this semester. I did BEngg from China and being accepted to Al-Madinah. The university is recognized by Govt of Malaysia and listed with IAU UNESCO. If i graduate with this university, would the degree be considered equivalent to PhD degrees awarded by other universities ?

 

i checked the IAU/UNESCO handbook and it seems that Al-Madinah is not included. Here's the list. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the info. i'll e-mail them asap. by the way, which PhD course are you planning to take up in MEDIU?. I'm also interested with their PhD in Education but when i talked to their online Live Chat, the guy couldn't give me a direct answer about the fees.

The Online Chat Service really ..cks. What you need is to browse the Faculty of Education and contact their dean by email. This is what i have done and quite sucessful so far.

 

I think the fees are the same for all PhD courses. Specific program duration is what differs from program to program. For example, the PhD in ICT, pursued fulltime, is 2 years; whereas, the PhD in Business Management is 3 years. I plan on applying for the ICT PhD, as soon as I receive my undergrad transcript.

 

I cannot speak about the US but in Canada, most PhDs would take a B.Eng but many would ask you to enroll first as a master's student then transfer to a PhD provided that you have a good GPA. People with Bachelors usually are required to complete more credits but still less credits if you were to do both degrees.

Most students decide for the Master's and then the PhD, the reason for this is because there is always the risk that you won't finish a PhD and then end with nothing. Also, very few students are offered the option to do the PhD with only a B.Eng and this is mainly the case for people with very high GPAs and high scores in GRE.

 

At MEDIU, what you need is a Bachelors Degree with two years relevant experience for direct entry to PhD. Moreover, you enjoy thrity perecent fee waivers if you are a lecturer/teacher from playgroup to universities.

 

@ engadnan what do you mean by 30% fee waiver. Do you mean if you're currently working in the academe as a lecturer you will receive the discount?. Please explain in detailed. thanks in advance. I'm still undecided to enroll in MEDIU. I e-mail The Open University of Cyprus and still awaiting for their reply, once i got their response i will decide immediately.
