It seems sometimes that "school" operators are not too caring in their choice of names. "Calamus" sounds like it might be the root of the word "calamity."

My vote is that it stands for the profoundly oxymoronic title of Professional Dilettante.

 

Calamus is a genus of palms -- perhaps an allusion to the Caribbean?
