I just found this program -- had not heard of it before. It appears to be totally online, except they say you either have to meet in person with the Director one time before starting the degree, or take the GRE for identification purposes. Tuition is $395 per credit hour plus 10% of that as an online fee -- the way I'm reading it. Here's the link: Lindenwood University - Saint Charles, MO - Online Programs Anyone heard of this one? Any comments?
I believe this is an important find, being that it is now only the third such program in the US -- an MFA offered completely online, as is National and UTEP. Also, like UTEP, this school offers both a residential and an online MFA.
$395 per credit, 48 credits for the program, means the total tuition is less than nineteen grand. Considering that an MFA is a terminal degree, that's a steal!
Yes, indeed. Further, they also have a 50% scholarship for students 55 and older -- which I would qualify for!
Some school reserve the scholarship for instate students; I wonder if this is the case for this school?
No, I don't think so. I talked with Admissions, and they told me I could get it as an online student. I might do this. I was all set up with National but my wife begged me not to go that much in debt at this time, considering my financial situation. Ole Miss is a possible option, but I have found them to be -- well, not quite what I'd hoped. I still wish I could come up with more money that I didn't have to pay back. I'll keep looking. Anybody want to buy a 25-year old poetry book?
Just to add: National requires 13 courses, Ole Miss 14, and Lindenwood 16, but because of the 50% scholarship I might have to go with Lindenwood. I'm a very loyal person, and I hate to give up on NU because they have been super helpful to me, but I may not have a choice. I wish it didn't have to come down to money. I'm not deciding against NU just yet, but I would have to find LOTS of free money somewhere. I've been searching but coming up empty.
Has anyone looked further into this program? I'm very interested. Is the accreditation good for the west coast as well?
Hi Catey! Lindenwood is Regionally Accredited (North Central Association.) Regional Accreditation is as good as it gets, in the US. Accreditation by any one of the six Regional Accreditors means a school's degrees are valid everywhere in the US - and you'll likely get good mileage from one in other countries as well. Johann
Lindenwood MFA Questions Michael, did you end up applying to this program? If so, were you accepted? How long did it take to find out? Did you attend?
I applied and was accepted last winter. However, I have not been able to enroll because of finances, but hopefully that changes soon.
Sure, if it's autographed by the late Allen Ginsberg. :jester: "Allen Ginsberg warns you dont follow my path to extinction” Johann
OK - if you say so. I'm not sure mine is, although it's certainly far less-known. Ginsberg's work (Howl) immediately resonated with me, in 1958, when I was 15. It got me into some trouble that year, in high school, too. Merely bringing a copy into his classroom scandalized my English teacher, after he'd had a chance to peruse a bit of it. I kind of enjoyed the notoriety. I heard the voices of the Beat Generation writers 55 years ago and I still enjoy reading them today. Johann
