    Charged with plagiarism

I have recently been charged with plagiarism through the University of Phoenix . I had to acknowledge a letter and reply to the letter stating my side. I admitted to my actions and sad I was deeply embarrassed and regret everything. I am a great student but things have been stressful these past few months with me taking care of my mother who was recently diagnosed with cancer. No excuse, I know, but I am hoping that the school gives me a second chance. The letter the sent said I must reply within ten days or it will result in my indefinite suspension. I am just wonder if anyone can shed some light on what will happen?

I don't have any actual information on that subject but I'll offer my opinion. UoP has had such an enrollment drop as of late that I will bet that they will be lenient on you. They can't afford to lose many more students.

How flagellant was your plagiarism? Was it just a little thing where you didn't give credit where it was due, or did you copy and paste a big section or an entire paper and claim it was your own?

I honestly doubt their enrollment has any part in the decision process. Take a look at the school policy. Where I teach there are different levels of plagiarism. If you did it, you did it. You admit it and move on. If you are a repeat offender that is a different story. First, I would look at the schools policy so you know where you stand. The worst thing you could do is lie about it after being caught. When student lie to me, and they have, I take it as a personal insult.

Plus, with services such as turnitin.com readily available, it's pretty dangerous to attempt plagiarism.

Do the teachers have any say so in this? My appeal letter is going to the Ethics Committee and will be reviewed within the next few weeks they said.

It is my understanding that the professors do not have much final say in the matter. It is possible that they will be consulted but that kind of decision occurs at a higher level.

Sometimes the wait will be several hours if there are no mods online at the time you post.

How bad was your plagiarism? Was it little or big? By the way, we don't condemn you for it.

Thank you, I was wondering what was taking so long. Here is my next question? What is the difference between Indefinite Suspension and Expulsion? Do you know if my credits from University of Phoenix will transfer to another school?

I am not going to lie, what I did was not ethically right. I plagiarized on a few things :/ I DEFINITELY learned my lesson. Stupid me. Just let other things get in the way ie. taking care of my mom and was too worried about missing points on these assignments that I did what I did.

Indefinite suspension provides the possibility that you will be allowed to come back at some time; expulsion means you are gone. I'm not sure they can take away credits you have already earned no matter what the outcome is, but I don't know that for a fact. Randell, do you know about that?

Sorry to hear about your mom, mine had a pretty radical case of breast cancer recently. She came out of it pretty much OK, though. I pray the same for yours.

Desperation can cause one to do things they later regret. I can understand how a person would fall into that.

Well, did your instructor contact you before taking administrative attention? It happened to me once for my undergraduate class at Troy University. I did once when I was on active duty, while taking 3 classes (10-week term) and dealing with unit field training and deployment as the same time. My paper was 40% matched with Internet sources by TurnItIn.com, which was beyond the acceptable level. The instructor contacted me prior taking any administrative attentions; I explained to her about the situation. She gave me another chance to rewrite the paper.

oh ok, well that provides me with some relief because on my letter it said If I didn't not reply to the letter within ten days it would result in my indefinite suspension. I am six classes away from earning my associates, so I hope they don't take away the courses I have already been accredited!

And thank you, I really appreciate your kind words. Things haven't been easy, but slowly getting better! I am glad to hear your mom is well :)

The teacher tried calling me, the same night she wrote me about the plagiarism. I missed her call, but I did write her telling her my side of the story and that I admit to these actions. She allowed me to turn in the final project which was due that week and gave me a D+ for the class?

After you taking care of this issue or after you receiving your Associate. I would recommend you to leave University of Phoenix to somewhere else. University of Phoenix is number one infamous in employment perspectives. My own experiences with the hiring managers, the following institutions in resumes will be drop immediately prior consideration: University of Phoenix , Westwood College, ITT Tech Institute, and Strayer University .

I have been told this by numerous people. I like the fact that I can do the school online and you cant find that with other universities. I do need to look into another school. Any suggestions? Do you know if I am charged and this is put on my transcript, will other schools still accept me?
