Question for the folks on here. Granted I am looking far out but once I finish my Masters of Science in Human Resources Management from Troy University I am looking into furthering my education as I will have a good deal of Post 911 GI Bill benefts left. My hands are slightly tied because you can not use GI Bill or Tuition Assistance from the military for a PHD/Doctoral degree. With that said I am looking at possibly pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from NCU, likely in Project Management (or one of their other offerings not certain at this time). Would this be a worthwhile "notch" in my educational belt? What is the utility of a CAGS? Thanks in advance for any input you have.

FYI, you can use the GI Bill for Doctoral studies; both chapter 30 and 33 allow this.

also, as a secondary question. what are the terms/semesters at NCU? I have been browsing their website and cannot seem to track down the information.

actually based off of the information I recieved from the Navy College main office you are not allowed to use Ch. 30 or 33 or TA for Doctoral studies. I will have to do some digging to find any messages pertaining to this as I was not given an instruction to base the information off of. Thanks for the input though as I will have to look deeper into it.

I can assure you that they are wrong about the GI Bill. The Montgomery and Post 9/11 GI Bills definitely cover Doctoral level education. Make sure you talk to the VA specifically (http://www.gibill.va.gov/) about matters pertaining to the GI Bill, as many education offices and even schools are still unaware or uninformed of the various changes. You could end up schooling your TA office so they stop misleading other Sailors about the GI Bill.

You may be right about TA, but Ch. 33 VA benefits are definitely applicable to doctoral studies.

(I am a VA certifying official.)

I am almost complete with my MBA at NCU.
The courses start every monday and you can sign up and gain access to the course syllabus any day. Just call an enrollment advisor and they will explain it.
I can also answer some questions you may have.
The courses are pretty much distance learning as there is no interaction with other students. You work the syllabus over an 8 week period and submit assignments as you finish them. If you are fast and you have a fast grading mentor, you can finish a course in 3 weeks.
The courses are writing and research intensive but once you get the hang of it, you will be fine.

I am in the same boat as you. As far as I know, my company will not reimburse tuition costs for a PhD however the CAGS is a certificate. I was really wanting to get a CAGS and then transfer those credits into another school like Nova Southeastern for the final PhD.

If you want to see a syllabus PM me and I'll email one to you. You could actually get to work on the course without even signing up for the class, once you have the syllabus.

Thanks. Maybe the person I spoke with was simply confused or did not know better and just blanketed all programs instead of just TA.

Thanks for the info. I have PM'd you. I did not realize their semesters are 8 weeks. Based off of what I was reading on some older posts it looked like Graduate/Doctoral level was 12. 8 weeks is awesome as it leaves a good bit of my benefits left over to give to my wife. Thanks for the info.
