okydd was kind enough to point out the Alison diploma and certificate website. Anyone know anything about it? It looks interesting for my disabled friend because one can earn an unaccredited diploma or a certificate in specific business management, IT, accounting and other subjects. It might be a good way for him to move forward for free and feel like he is accomplishing something. Plus, since he has nothing to show currently, an unaccredited diploma might be better than nothing on a resume. What do you think?

I think the certificates would be a good idea. the more the better. Many cert programs are not really formally accredited anyway. I always advise folks to get some certs on a resume to give them an edge up. We live in a credentialist society, and the companies can select their choice of meat at the lowest price. Why not make oneself the "Ranchers Select"?

Tell him to go for the certs man. If he/she starts working, she can perhaps have these certs translated in credits later on at a private school (not uncommon) uni.

    See ya man!!!

Well, it's another idea for someone who seems to be exhausting ideas. Just know that by themselves, they might not help him land a job. However, I can envision your master plan. If he can finish one of their programs, he might be empowered to get college credit. In fact, if he does ALISON for business or accounting, he can then move on to take the pertinent CLEPs :yup:

Brilliant, MC! I never thought of that. Is there a CLEP for accounting? That's what I'm trying to push him to do.

Thank, Ab! I appreciate the input. That's exactly what I trying to do.

Has he gone down to the Dept. of Rehab? If he hasn't, tell him to go. They can assign him a one on one case manager, and hopefully pay for his training/schooling needs.

By any chance, was your friend injured in the military?

There is one for Financial Accounting (and a DSST on the same subject).

Poking around, there are plenty of ALISON courses that relate to credit-by-exams.

I liken it to t his scenario:

I send two guys down to interview for a forklift job.
*one has the experience, but no forklift license
    * Two -the other has some experience, and spent $35.00 to get forklift certified.

Who usally gets the job? The guy who has the experience and the cert. Not rocket science, or sciencia. So let's further explore, looking at it from the employers perspective. The employer gets an experienced forklift driver, and he saves money on insurance, plus it looks good to have certified employees for CALOSHA purposes. - No brainer.

    See ya,

Cool, thanks. He is 25 and never had a job in his life. Nobody will hire him and he has tried. Because of his eye problems, he looks odd like he might be on drugs and employers will not consider him for even the lowliest jobs. So I'm thinking that even an unaccredited diploma might show that he has at least something going on. Plus, it might give him some confidence.

I think that works only if it doesn't work.

In other words, should he decide to move forward, he's actually only just starting. Without starting a war, I had this struggle when deciding between NA/RA, and as it turns out, the quanity of work is the same....so.....

You may have uncovered a way to take unaccredited courses and end up with RA credit. Very cool.

Maybe you could offer him a diploma from your Doctorate of Cheffery program we joked about a while ago?

He blew it with the Dept. of Rehab. Started with them and didn't follow through. He is a big quitter and I'm trying to help him make a turnaround before it's too late. Has serious self image and depression problems.

    LOL, I'm working on it.

No, seriously, I just checked out the courses and diploma list. I retract my opinion and say GO FOR IT! It actually looks fun, and the time investment is under 8 hours. I wrongly assumed it was a full length program- 6-8-20 week type and would be a waste of time. I think it looks ideal! In fact, as soon as I hit send, I'm going back to go take one that looks fun.

This is tangential to a degree and education, but as far as him potentially becoming more confident and employable, what about volunteering?

That could give him a sense of accomplishment, show potential employers something good, and give him networking opportunity.

A suggestion, purchase of copy of "The Feeling Good Handbook," by David Burns (this is a rather large, blue workbook) and present it or read it to your friend. An invaluable resource for the PLM (poor little me) people. Regarding the CLEP or DSST in Financial Accounting - without a rather intensive background in Accounting I have doubts about the ability to pass this exam (spoken from my experience of BS in Accounting, MBA [concentration in accounting] and 25 years in the business world.

Here is another idea. It is the University of the People. It has the support of the UN and some other reputable organizations. Two free degrees, business and IT.

Latest News: I texted my disabled friend and sent him a link to Allison and he got very excited. He signed up and just texted me that he is 15% done with Intro to Accounting. Maybe this won't actually get him anywhere, I don't know, but if it lights his spark, it could help him get out of the emotional swamp he is in. If he discovers he has a knack and a love for accounting, he may find the mojo to get a real accounting degree. If you are a praying person, please say a word for him to finally catch some traction.

That's awesome! I hope it goes well for him.

I'm pretty excited about ALISON, myself. The diploma program in Business and Law looks right up my alley (for when I'm done with these eternal degrees).
