Why can't our Theologians have their own section?

Why cannot we dedicate a section to theology studies Under Career and Specific Degrees? We have a number of theologians, theology students and would be theology students on this board.

    Who ever said you can't?

Religious and theology degrees used to generate a lot of interest here, but not so much anymore for some reason.

We can certainly run it by Chip, I think it would be a good addition.

Sounds like a good idea to me!

I recently advocated for a separate forum related to law school. No go. Not enough interest. There may be some theology students within our membership but scanning back through the threads I don't see a lot of action there. And after all, it's not like the topic of theological study is being discouraged in any way. How would a separate forum change anything?

The only subforum that I am aware of on this site is New Posts.

I have the strange feeling that once a topic gets a dedicated subforum it reduces the general "activity" around that subject. Maybe it is just me, but I check those forums even core to my interest (Management/IT) on a maximum once per week while I look at least daily through the posting at the main forum. But for the small amount of discussions going on in the (degree centric) subforms checking in once per week is even more than enough. My suggestion would be to have instead a "syndicated" forum category, which lists all topics at once (I am to lazy to log in every time so the new postings function is not an option).

Can it be a hidden forum, visible only to those with theology group access?

Cool! A secret club only for insiders! Where do I sign up?

A containment area for theologians? Good idea! :scool:

More like a social commentary. Theologians have the enviable trait of being able to believe in things that many can't and take a lot of grief from people who don't agree because there's no scientific proof of what they espouse. It made sense to me to suggest an invisible forum that only they could reap the benefits of.

I don't think having a separate section is warranted, there just doesn't seem to be enough interest in it. Just a rough estimate, but it seems like there are about as many threads posted about history degrees as there are about theology degrees. Also I agree with Woho re the post drop-off for new forum areas.

By the way, there is a way to keep yourself logged in ... instead of using the login box at the top of the pages, try this: While logged out, click the "Post New Thread" button in one of the forums. You'll see a login box with a "Remember Me" checkbox at the bottom. Once you log in that way, you'll be kept logged in for quite awhile.

I don't want to take this thread too far afield into a "science & religion" discussion, but I was wondering, would you say that all rationally held beliefs must be scientifically provable?

Have to agree with the poster about segregating the traffic. I like to see more people post on the boards here. Eventually everyone will be separate and we won't be discussing the issues we enjoy (Distance Learning).

This is one of the few boards that I come to where veteran posters don't reply to every question with a snarky "We have a search function you know?" or puting up stupid let me Google that for you links. That type of stuff really cuts down on the traffic.

    More traffic the better.

    No, four reasons:
    1. Because there are things that are true as I type this that science has not advanced to the point where they can be identified let alone be proven.

    2. Because we'd have to agree on a definition of rational and a definition of belief.

    3. Once the words from point two are defined, then we'd have to choose a group of people or an individual person to apply those definitions to.

    4. Then we'd have to accept that our definitions may not fit the person or group from their paradigm.

These four reasons make any discussion of rational or belief entirely impossible except within groups that believe the same things. This forum is not one of those places.

On a personal note: I was very careful in how I worded what I posted so as to allow it to be seen by those with belief as being a bit deferential to the fact that they can believe. If I was intending to evoke the kind of discussion that would question belief then I'd likely have been far less careful. (but my joke stands nonetheless and the analogy is appropriate.)

    Thanks,
    ITJD

I am not sure how beliefs, rational or irrational, pertain to a discussion of Distance Learning Environments for those interested in furthering their education in the field of theology.

Then feel free to take that up with the person who asked the initial question and leave me out of it. I just replied to the prompt directly addressed at me.

Lots of threads fall off-topic after a bit. Typically it's a sign that the original topic has been nearly exhausted.

Thank you ITJD for your reply, certainly one of the more eloquent replies to the question I've heard! Although really just point 2 was sufficient, point 1 (while true) was basically irrelevant and points 3 & 4 followed from point 2. In deference to the purpose of this thread & forum I'll end my participation in the discussion here, though perhaps another time I'll start a discussion on the subject in the off-topic forum.
