    Hi,

I am gathering information on good on-line or blended MBA program. Cost less than or around 50K is a factor. I short listed similar to most of the people in this forum

    1. IE business school
    2. University of Florida
    3. Kelly direct
    3. UMass Amherst
    4. Penn World

Many people are talking good about UMass Amherst. They have blended MBA program. But what I found, similar to Penn World; UMass online is open for the world. No residencies. Anyone from any corner of the world can get these degrees without any residencies.

Does this matter substantially? How do they control the reputation of their degrees?
Do they really control quality/authenticity of students enrolling into on-line from oversees? Or these are more of money generating programs.

Is it better approach to skip 100% on-line degrees and stick to blended or programs with some residency requirement?

    Appreciate your thoughts.

    Thank you.

One more interesting UMass Lowell allows only US Citizens/Residents and student visa holders.

I think (my personal opinion) it is 100% OK with 100% on-line as an educational delivery method. But if on-line universities are open to any corner of world, how do they screen people who are applying to these some what prestigious universities?

The application process will be similar for all these schools. Some might require admissions tests like the GRE but some might not. They'll look at transcripts, etc. It's not rocket surgery. If the school has a good reputation they'll maintain it by keeping high standards. You may find that with many of these online schools it's not that hard to get in but it may be very hard to stay in.

IE is one of the schools I short listed. One of top ranked schools in the world based in Mandrid with very good program and around 50K. They have two full week residency in their program. It may not be easy to get in there. Disadvantage is, in US most people are not aware of top schools outside US except LSB; even they are consistently ranked before US Ivy schools. And Ivy schools are almost out of reach for most. I am giving IE as my first option if I can get into the program.

Kelly direct has residency. UFL has face to face every 8 months and on campus examination. NC state jerkins MBA has very good program if focus is in technology, IT services or supply chain management. And this has residency requirements. Penn World and UMass Amherst are 100% online.

I am almost decided to go with UMass after doing re-searching around and with the help of this forum. And now re-thinking. Are there good schools options around 50K, with blended or short residency?

Yes, students from US, I agree with you. Imagine transcripts from some country and the person who submitted no need to show his/her face. My suspicion is are public universities are also going the route of money making using these programs at the cost of quality?

What quality? Quality of the people coming in? Amount of people coming in? Market saturation from graduates?

Of course they are profiting from the online programs and it makes it more accessible to people that traditionally would not have been able to complete school and would not have pursued a degree. This allows more people to enroll and ultimately more people to graduate. I would say as far as the quality of the program, speaking of none in particular, is the same as a butt-in-seat course. Look at it this way, in most cases, the person completing the 100% online and the person completing the 100% traditional course work will end up with the same exact diploma. While you may have a personal issue with something, it is more important what the market place (both on the front end, students, and on the back end, hiring managers) considers to be an issue or not.

I am right now looking for an on-line school. Like I said above, if some of these schools become like open universities; should we consider this as a factor in choosing the on-line school. That was my question.

It's simply one of the top Business Schools in the world. In the 2010 MBA rank from The Economist, IE was above Yale, Duke, Cambridge, UCLA, Notre Dame, INSEAD, etc...

But for some reason it seems be a stronger brand in Europe and Latin America, not here.

Thanks for sharing, and being the second person to not say what the IE stood for.

Evidently Instituto de Empresa Business School doesn't slip off the tongue, or keyboard, as easy.
