So far, there has not been any discussion on DL program in India? Can any expert tell me what is the latest development in DL graduate program ? I mean a legitimate one and a serious one. Thank you !

    What an excellent question.

Part of my work for BG14 involved trying to get some Indian schools added to the database; at the time, this just wasn't possible. I did get a letter from someone at a school called Madurai Kamaraj University (a legitimate brick-and-mortar institution in Tamil Nadu), which offers many distance learning master's programs, but not to U.S. residents. (They don't yet have an agency/study center in our country, and it's not at all clear that they ever will.)

I've also spoken to a professor at Indira Gandhi Open University--but like Madurai Kamaraj, they don't offer their programs to U.S. students. (I notice you're in Asia; you may have better luck!)

The best place I've found to look for distance learning programs in India is the ICDL database:
    http://www-icdl.open.ac.uk/providerResult.ihtml?loc=india

Best of luck to you--and please tell me if you do find something!

    Cheers,

    Hello, Tom,

Thank you for your response. Initially, I planned to enrol in UNISA as I really cannot afford the expensive DL tuition in USA and those joint program in Asian countries,e.g. Hong Kong and Singapore. In view of the uncertainty in structural reform in higher education in South Africa, I adopt wait and see attitude. At the same time, I am quite impressive with Indian higher education especially when I was in Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore last year. I may need to contact my acquaintance faculty member there and ask for any updated DL higher education in India.

I'm delighted to be of help; please let me know how things go.

One other option you might consider: Australia (also in the ICDL database). They tend to run much cheaper than the U.S., albeit significantly more expensive than UNISA.

    Best of luck!

    Cheers,

    Any update?

    Hey Tom,

Any news on whether any of these schools in India are now accepting U.S. students?

    Thanks.

Good question, Roscoe. Nothing to report at the moment, but somebody really ought to do for India what we did for Australia and South Africa in BG14. (This might not be a bad claim to fame for Degreeinfo--it's something nobody has covered yet. Alternately, I might take a crack at it if I get in the right mood.) I have heard an anecdote that Gujarat Vidyapeeth--Gandhi's school--offers low-residency research master's and Ph.D. programs, but I can't recall where that anecdote came from or how credible it might have been.

At some point in the semi-distant future (it would almost have to be after the Ph.D.), I would very much like the opportunity to do a diploma program in Sanskrit and an M.A. in Vaishnava studies and/or Indian philosophy. I did a little preliminary study in Hinduism and Sanskrit a few years back, and would love a good excuse to take it to the next level.

    Cheers,

I had brought up this subject some time back.

India now has its first Online degree programs from one of its legitimate Universities.

"Punjab Technical University". Looks like these programs are open for students from US.

    Go to www.ptuonline.com

    --------------------------------
You can also try "kota open university" for PhD programs.

    Namas-te

FYI, it appears that for Masters courses at Kota Open University "the study material of these programmes is available in Hindi only."

    Namaste!

I had seen that. Thats the reason i mentioned Kota Open uni for PHD programs only .. where you can write thesis in english. Thanks for bringing this up.

"The study material of these programmes is available in Hindi only, though, the students have the choice to opt for either English or Hindi as a medium for examination and for writing assignments."

While surfing around a bit I bumped into this web site:
    http://www.kuwarangal.com
which describes itself as the official website of Kakatiya University in India. After approximately 15 seconds of research I am guessing that this is a real school, with real students and it operates under the "official" system of accreditation in that country. They seem to offer a whole bunch of programs by DL but it's difficult to find out much about them or the school itself as most of the links on the front page of the web site are dead and no one on the faculty/administration has an email address. If you click on the "Distance Learning" link you'll get a list of programs. If you click on the "VC's Desk" link you'll get a blurb about accreditation. If some enterprising soul were to write to these people and request detailed information it might be very interesting. Details about admission from outside of India and language of instruction might be a good place to start.

So, here's another one. It's the Punjab Technical University:
    http://www.ptuonline.com
They clearly state that the language of instruction is English and the fee scedule is laid out for a worldwide student body. The cost seems to be about US2K per semester for grad programs. Perhaps someone with more expertise than me can evaluate this school.

PTU is a legitimate university recognised by UGC and AICTE. Their degrees are equivalent to RA degrees here. But i could not understand their association with IUAA and VUAA.

  13. How do you get the schools in India to respond?

I've sent emails to a number of them but have not received a single reply.

I have assumed that one would have to actually :( write a letter and :( bring it to the post office and then :( wait for a similar response. Obviously I'm just joking in that it's really not that big of a deal to send a letter, etc. but as I'm merely curious and not genuinely interested in enrolling I thought I'd save myself and the school some time and postage.
