Looking to compliment my degree once I've completed the MPS in May 2012, and in researching I came across this topic. I searched the board, but did not see a list of any other than the CEU's offered by Harvard and the University of Florida. Is anyone aware of any other options?

I saw this one through eCornell, but I'm curious if the brand has been diluted with heavy marketing. Master Certificate in Healthcare Leadership - Online Certificate Program | eCornell

It still looks like a great program. I was looking more for a complete grad cert, which eCornell fits, but I want to explore all options.

I asked the same question (so I know there is another thread with it) with a few responses. I can think of UMUC, St Leo, and Florida Gulf Coast University as options.

Thanks major, I'll look into those for sure. I'm wanting to make sure I compliment my MPS and since it's a mix of both Homeland Security and Public Health Preparedness, Healthcare Administration came to mind when I was looking. Do either of you have any other suggestions beyond Healthcare Admin?

Any thoughts on this one from Johns Hopkins? Certificate Programs

As far as medically recognized degrees, I imagine Johns Hopkins carries some hefty name weight.

EDIT: I thought this was a cert in Health policy and Management, but that's actually the school it's offered through. The cert is actually Public Health Informatics which isn't really a field I'm interested in. If only they offered a few more options. Their name recognition is almost second to none in the medical field.

If Public Health Informatics were your additional area of interest; such a certificate would definitely have the institutional name and reputation … AND of course the Johns Hopkins price. :icon16:

I reviewed your EM list and my MPS is actually in HLS and Public Health so I was leaning more toward medically related certs so that I have a more diverse resume. Since my bachelor's degree is in EM/HLS, I'm trying to stay away from those topics unless I pull the trigger on a doctorate. No doubt Johns Hopkins would be expensive, but that name would be a heavy hitter on a resume. Too bad it's in informatics and not health policy and management. :)

Anyone have any thoughts on this Public Health Leadership program as it would compliment my degree(s)?

Looks like the course are condensed into 8-10 week formats which I like but would this add anything to what I already have or getting? The MPS/PHP has some admin courses that I've already successfully completed, but would a cert like this enhance my resume any?

It would enhance your resume but it should also complement your work experience. Do you work in public health?

Did you notice that there is a face to face course?

PUBH 790: Public Health Leadership Seminar-- Leadership Style: (2 credits) This course is conducted in a face to face workshop format. It is designed to further students' understanding of leadership and of their leadership skills and style. As part of the seminar, students develop personal definitions of leadership and leadership development plans for the future. Students use several leadership assessments to understand various aspects of their leadership styles, including the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), FIRO B, and the Change Style Indicator. I did notice that Randell, but the workshop is only a total of 3 days. I imagine that it would be intense if it's worth 2 credits. I know that UNC has a great reputation in the field of public health as well. I'm in emergency management right now which obviously has a public health component, but I'm not currently working on the medical side. I'm trying to find something that will allow me to broaden my options within EM and possibly break into public health without going back and getting an MPH. My MPS in PHP has core courses in public health but it appears to be missing the business and leadership courses that traditional MPHs teach.

I was also giving this one through Tulane consideration as well. Tulane University - Industrial Hygiene Certificate Program - Tulane University, Distance Education- School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine

There are so many niche certs out there in public health or its related fields that it makes this process confusing. Also, not that it's a secret or anything, but I'd like to find a path within public health that's monetarily satisfying considering my previous profession paid peanuts. I'm also aware that in general, public health isn't exactly a field to receive high pay. That's why the Tulane program and various other related to public health are being considered. Thanks for your replies. :)

Have you looked at University of West Florida?

    Public Health
JOBS, JOBS AND MORE JOBS…Ever thought about being a “disease detective”? This is one of the options open to you in the field of public health. The prime directives in public health are to protect and improve the public’s health, to increase access to health services and prevent health disparities, and to determine the causes and distribution of disease and to use that knowledge to prevent future outbreaks of disease.

Officials with the American Public Health Association say that 50 percent of the federal public health work force and 25 percent of the state public health work force will retire in the next five years. That’s a lot of job openings, and our Certificate Programs in Public Health are a great place for you to start! Begin now to position yourself to enter a field that offers incredible opportunities for employment and advancement. You can complete the certificate programs to learn more about these fields, for promotional opportunities in your current job, or to retool for a new career path on your way to earning a Master of Public Health (the professional degree in Public Health). For the UWF MPH program, you can take up to 4 courses, including those in the Certificate Programs, while you are in the process of completing your application for admission. Specializations within the Certificate Programs in Public Health include Emergency Management (Look at Certificate Plan), Environmental Health (Look at Certificate Plan), Infection Control (Look at Certificate Plan), and Occupational Safety and Health (Look at Certificate Plan). An additional specialization in Readiness and Response is available at the undergraduate level. Go to web site for more information.

For more information about these certificates, please contact Dr. Enid Sisskin ([email protected]) or 850.473.7473.

I know someone in this field "Occupational Safety and Health " and they make some serious money, but it seems to be on the fringe of public health. It might be that he's confined to the oilfield though and I just perceive it to be that way. The money he makes is ridiculous, but he also works 2 weeks offshore a month. That's why the Tulane Industrial Hygiene cert looked good as well. I'll take a look at UWFs cert a little later as well. I'm thinking that the cert is where I'll be able to find that niche, whereas my masters, while specific in public health preparedness, will serve as my public health foundation.

To me that means I should stay away from the general public health certs and concentrate on something more specific. I could be wrong however.

Just for frame of reference, can you clarify "The money he makes is ridiculous"? $60-80K, $100-150K, or $200K+?

200K+ , but for clarification he's been doing it for around 25 years and has gathered quite a few professional certs. Plus, the oilfield, when oil and gas production is high, pay really high salaries.
