LOL, awesome article. A firestarter, but very valid arguments. Enjoy.

What's funny about this is that this is a forum post that quotes a blog post as a reference. Now there's a credible article for you.

Here's a couple tasty excerpts: "For one thing, most people who went to grad school did it to prolong adolescent needs for grade-based approval." "Multiple degrees are from people who don’t know themselves, don’t value their time, and are stuck in a rut trying to impress people with academic trophies."

    I resemble those statements!

    Me too SurfDoctor!
I wonder why I try to get all of the achievements in Xbox games. Or why I drive a 430hp Corvette? Or why I broke the high school bench press record? Or why I completed my MCSE in 6 weeks.
Its all to keep telling myself that "I'm good enough. I'm smart enough... And doggonit. People like me." :)

I don't know about you guys, but I'd feel much more comfortable about going to the hospital if it wasn't for all those pesky M.D.s. I feel much more comfortable asking for legal & medical advice on the internet.

On a serious note, the article is fun & interesting, but it gives off a vibe as if it were written by someone who either a) didn't get accepted to a grad program, or b) couldn't hack it in a grad program.

With Ford eliminating the Mercury division … you drive a collectable Randell.:drive:

They mentioned law, business and humanities. I studied chemistry in grad school. I did so because I wanted to know certain things that's where one went to learn them. When I desire food I go to the grocery store, when I want auto repair I go to an auto shop, when I wanted advanced education in certain specific topics I went to grad school.

Except I called it gradual school, not graduate school. (smile)

Funny the author mentions Google, who hires a ton of people with graduate degrees (though they will also hire very talented people with only a bachelors). And then the author mentions Merck, which hires a ton of people with graduate degrees. Sorry, but the most important knowledge for a new Merck employee is not "self-knowledge", it is chemistry/biochemistry/pharmaceutical chemistry/bioinformatics knowledge. And yes, Google does behavioral testing, but good "behavioral scores" aren't going to overcome doing poorly on their famous technical tests.

Penelope Trunk has a lot of interesting things to say, and has a lot of good ideas. Sometimes she's a little off the mark, though.

Great article!! I really enjoyed it, and completely agree. I'm at that point of finishing BS and being REAL work experience, but I'd also like to get an MBA at the same time. Thinking about doing both :veryhappy: (Hey, if Ryoder can, I can. Well, at least not at the same speed).

Its great to be able to join you all on degreeinfo. I'm a member over at IC, and I see a few of my fellow members are on here as well. I'll do an intro in the correct section later.

    1. She's writing to elicit blog replies and metrics.
    2. She makes no effort to cite sources.
Result: This is about as useful as failblog or a water saturated towel.

Exactly. I would wager that most employees at Merck have multiple degrees! That was a poor example, and really it was just a sad attempt by the author to expand his thesis outside of his realm of knowledge.

I don't own a car and don't even know what an MCSE is. I guess I lose.

MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) and you are not missing anything! By the way, I only speak English so I guess you win...about 5 or 6 times (once for each language you speak).
