I found this article/blog interesting Worst Deals on College - The Salary Reporter

At least the author and I can agree on one thing, your major is the single most important aspect in realizing a good ROI on any degree. I also think that factoring cost of the education with likely salary in that given job field is important but I sometimes wince when we boil college down to dollars and cents as if it were simply a cold, calculated business decision. I agree with the logic in many cases but in some cases, people major in a given subject area and/or attend a given school for less materialistic reasons.

Yeah, but some does not mean all. Nor does it mean majority. So it's reasonable to assume that a lot of the people attending college are doing it in the hopes that it will eventually "pay-off". Meaning they are looking for an education to help attain some sort of financial independence. Stating this, some people pick stupid majors that are not as valued as others.

True...I just thing it's a sad thing. There used to be a time when some people got an education because of higher minded reasons. Now it's all about money...almost always about money. I wish I could say I was different but I am not, I have to survive in a very competetive market where he with the bigger stick usually wins. Ah well...back to studying for my 2nd masters degree. :)

I am wondering if the writer is bias because the majority of schools have mentioned are historical black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Unfortunately many HBCUs have suffered from poor leadership and financial mismanagement. Chicago State was one school on the list. Although it isn't an HBCU, it is a state school that primarily serves minority students on the South Side of Chicago. CSU nearly lost its accreditation in 2009. Shaw was listed as the number one school on the list, and last year its president conceded the school would probably be placed on probation if it had to renew its accreditation. Texas Southern, another HBCU on the list, was placed on probation fairly recently. These are just the schools that I remember hearing about that were on the list. I suspect most of the other institutions on the list have suffered similar problems.

In my experience, Texas Southern University (Houston, TX) is in general perceived as a bottom-rung university as regards Texas postsecondary 4-year institutions (graduation rate a dismal 15%). Being a HBCU and politics, in my view, has likely significantly aided in reserving TSU’s standalone public university status and SACS accreditation time and again. Additionally, TSU has been financially mismanaged for so many years (most recent via former university president Priscilla Slade— charged with misapplication of fiduciary property of more than $200,000, e.g., Slade billed the university $260,000 for furniture, landscaping and a security system for her home (?)).

TSU’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law (Tier 4) has the lowest Bar Exam pass rates (year after year after year) in Texas. E.g., “Most recently, graduates passed the Texas bar exam at an average rate of 59.6 percent, nearly 25 percentage points lower than the state average. This metric placed Marshall Law last of nine ABA-accredited law schools in the state.”
