Newbie here. I am looking for a U.S. school that offers a PhD in International Relations or a PhD in Higher Education/Educational Administration/etc either online or with low residencies. I am looking for a school with non-profit status, preferably a state school and one that has a good reputation.

Hopeful wishing...no test scores like GRE needed.

I do not want an EdD for personal reasons, PhD only. I do not want to go to Walden, Capella, Phoenix or the like. I am looking for a strong school and hopefully one without the GRE. I'm looking at University of Southern Miss, Colorado State and Clemson.

Any other suggestions? I've been told Nova sucks, even though their conflict res program looks interesting.

    1. I'm curious what your goal is that it would be equally met by earning a PhD in International Relations or one in Higher Education.

    2. It's your call, but IMHO unless you have a very specific an unusual reason, discounting EdD programs out of hand is pretty foolish.

I desire the PhD as my graduate focus will be on research. At my institution, you can teach if you have a PhD, not an EdD. An EdD is viewed as a practioner's degree and not one an academic professional seeking to do research would undertake.

My focus is interdisciplinary, but a PhD in Education or IR is most desirable.

And just for all the haters out there, I personally do not think there is a difference b/t the EdD/PhD, just stating what is fact at my institution.

You are correct. As Dr. Pina has pointed out, empirical evidence suggests that the EdD, or other similar degree, and the PhD are almost identical. I am aware of many schools who are making this distinction between a PhD and other doctorates. I have heard that NCU is not all that interested in hiring doctorate holders who are not PhDs.

I don't think it's right for you to call someone who might be offended by a degradation of their degree a "hater." I doubt that many would be all that offended anyway.

Thank you kindly for the information. However, I do not see a DL option for the IR degrees or the higher ed program at UNT. Do you happen to have a direct link? I couldn't find it on their websites.

The UNT PhD in Higher Education can be completed part-time; however, it’s not a DL option per say … sorry.
