Threat of the week: California South University claims wrong info on degreeinfo

I always get a certain degree of amusement when we hear from an unwonderful school demanding that information be removed from DegreeInfo.

Today's email comes from the unwonderful California-South University (Not to be confused with the similarly named and totally legitimate University of Southern California or any of the other California State or University of California schools):

So yes, indeed, it does seem that the WHOIS information has changed since it was reported in the thread above. The current WHOIS information, for this school that calls itself California-South University and, one would presume, is located in California is, in fact, different than the WHOIS from 2010. Now, the school is apparently somewhere in England, per the domain registration record as follows:

Interestingly, the email address above is associated with Annie Dar, who, according to her facebook page is in Islamabad, Pakistan. She must have an awfully long commute to London and to southern California. Oh, and since the email above came from [email protected], and the Facebook page also references CalSuni, I think it's safe to say this is the same person.

Now... one look at the website of this lovely program makes it clear to almost anyone with any experience that this school is likely to issue degrees worthy of use as toilet paper, but not much else.

Oh, and another delightful finding: The "accreditor" that they list, EACOR.org, which has a website that looks suspiciously like Cal South's website, and conveniently has no listed address, just happens to be owned by.... the same people as Cal South!

    Who'd have thought that?

Really, now. When will fraudulent schools figure out that they're much better off just keeping quiet.

So, Cal South is actually a UK school run by an owner from Pakistan.

Gee, this inspires me to start a college. I'll call it Zimbabwe Tech, locate it in New Zealand, and run it from the USA. Oh, and I'll get instant recognition for it by starting my own accrediting agency.

I'll offer a doctorate based on the Great Books -- the "Dick and Jane" series from my elementary school days.

    Okay, I'll stop now. :)

Yes, California Southern University has real accreditation but California South University (which sounds like a shameless ripoff of two schools with similar names) does not.

If I were a Calilfornia Southern U student or almnus, I would be afraid my school would be confused with California South U.

California-South University -- No USDoE-recognized accreditation. Not on BPPE approved list.
California Southern University -- DETC accreditation. School of Law is CalBar registered.
California Southern School of Law -- No USDOE-recognized accreditation. CalBar registered.
University of Southern California -- Regional accreditation. School of Law is ABA approved.

    *****

For some reason, California Southern University is often confused with other institutions. Just keep the following points in mind:

-- "California Southern University" should not be confused with "California South University"

-- Also, the "California Southern University, School of Law" should not be confused with "California Southern School of Law" (both are "CalBar registered", although this status should not be confused with "CalBar approval").

-- Furthermore, "California Southern University" should not be confused with the "University of Southern California".

-- In addition, if California Southern University is abbreviated as "CSU", then it should not be confused with any of the numerous California State University campuses that use the abbreviation of "CSU".

    *****

It really is just that simple.

Note to self: Don't post threats from schools with names that are similar to real schools very late at night :)

Of course, the fake is CalSouth, and the legitimate schools are as stated by CalDog above.

Corrections have been made. Thanks for catching that, all!

I think that is the whole point. Name a fly by night $hit college similar to reputable institution in the hope that some idiot student will enroll under false pretenses.

Good for you that you didn't cave in, schools such as this one give online education a bad name.

I'm sure a former student will pop up soon to defend their school. :baby:

Then there's a non-wonderful named Cal Southern University based in the Great State of Texas (BG15, 193).

We get a lot of unwonderful contributions here that originate in Pakistan.

    Well well...

Apparently California-South is so incredibly busy that they are "loosing (sic) thousands of students" because of this and the other thread on DegreeInfo. Which I find really interesting, since the total thread views aren't in the thousands.

    Here's their latest threat:

Apparently she is so distraught over losing "thousands" of students that she forgot how to spell her own title. :D

I can't even count how many spelling and grammatical errors there are in her email. LOL

There has to be some kind of TOS for this forum? First, the wrong school is mentioned. 2nd, the webmaster gets a personal email/plea from an individual which is mentioned publicly with their name in full view instead of initials. 3rd, everyone starts picking on that individual with their full name. What a bunch of hypocrites! Just sayin!

Perhaps she attended the "school" she now works for?

Yes. I have a hunch that the OP might know a thing or two about that.

I was alarmed when I first saw that, too, however...

All is right with the world
