Some variation of the same theme keeps popping up all the time. Jobs didn't need one, Gates didn't need one, ad nauseaum. The theme will get repeated more as the US economy stays blah and people start lining up for lottery tickets. The current scandals in for-profit schools and the excesses of state colleges don't help any, either.

Well, a lot of the kids going to college should not be there. There are way more jobs only requiring a high school education or at the most a 2 year degree than there are jobs requiring a 4 year degree. No, not everyone should go to college. A lot should not be there. I agree that we should not be looking at the outliers like Jobs, Gates, et al. It's a very Gladwellian thing to do, incorrectand wrong, but it sells books and articles too.

Very good point. That's exactly what I was implying with my tongue-in-cheek comment about everyone dropping out.

Oh I knew you were being facetious. It must be difficult for HS seniors and their parents trying to gather information about college in this day and age. Everywhere you turn there is another story of a failed graduate or of for profit greed or even of schools offering things they cannot produce (i.e. jobs and career placement). It's a sticky situation.

How about the stories of people that graduate from a state school with a normal to low debt and do fairly well? How about a story of someone that worked their way through college and took out one loan, graduated, got a decent job, are happy in their professional and are paying back their loan. Hmm, guess that would not sell....
