Really weird transcript error

Hi there, first post here, looking for some guidance.

I'm going back to school to finish my Bachelor's. The school I applied to had me send a transcript request to the previous universities (2 of them) where I'd been a student previously. I filled out the transcript request and they faxed it to the previous universities. So I get my acceptance letter last week, and today I got my academic 'plan' that detailed all my previous credits, what I still needed to take, etc. Everything was correct on first glance, then I noticed something odd. There were three classes attritubted to me that I know I never took. I said something to the academic advisor and he called me back a little while ago. He confirmed that those classes/credis were showing up on one of the transcripts from the first university I attended out of high school. I told him I KNEW I hadn't taken them, (they were classes I would have never taken). He told me that even so, he couldn't remove them because they were a part of my official transcript from the other school. I'm guessing the university screwed up and attributed someone else's credit, (maybe someone with the same name as me). To my record. My advisor said it's going to be a pain in the arse to deal with because they probably don't have any way of figuring out who they really belong to, (they are under my social security number and everything). Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? If so, what should I do?

Yes, this kind of stuff does happen. You need to talk to the registrar's office at the original university, and have them correct your record. Then they can send the updated transcript to your current school.

Of course, it is also possible that the registrar will not be able to confirm the error. In that case, all that can be done is to accept the phantom credits. Hey, it's cheaper than CLEP!

Stefan may well be right; I've heard of this. And just in case, it is essential that you take steps now to (pardon my French) couvrir vos fesses.

HR person in 12 years: "So, Mr. 1976, we hired you in part because of those classes in Existential Chemistry on your transcript, and now we learn that you never took them. What's going on here?

Sam: There was a transcript error back in 2011, sir. Here the letter I sent by certified mail (and here is the return receipt) to the school, telling them of the error, and asking them to correct it. Here is a second certified letter to my other previous university, advising them of the problem. I tried to follow up with both, but could not get the problem resolved. (And for good measure, here's a screen shot of the inquiry I posted on a prominent on-line education forum, asking for advice from the experts there.)

Good luck. Let us know what happens.
