Need some input regarding the E. Cowan U in Austrailia...Bear reports that it is a viable school and the programs seem geared to distance learning...any words regarding same would be appreciated. Thanks, imperoo

It's a good school--with 22,000 students spread out over six campuses--and particularly strong (by my estimation) in the areas of education and nursing.

    Cheers,

    to Tom H et al

thanks for this post(s); I think I may have stumbled upon the RIGHTvenue for my needs...they DO indeed have much going for them and they seem to be fair-minded overall...I am going to seek the doctorate in information science for NO other reason than I am a librarian and at this time I feel I should make the PhD process a bit more utilitarian then I have done/thought in the past...anything else that you can add will be most welcome...thanks for the encouraging words. imperoo

    1) The Australian universities are publicly funded, so you don't have "for profit" concerns.

    2) Australian universities, like British and Canadian, utilize the "common coin" approach... i.e. they strive to maintain high, consistant standards accross universities. In other words, you don't have concerns that you are getting a "bad school".

    3) Australian universities, from what I hear, are quite well respected internationally... no "country of origin" concerns.

    Negative concerns

Primary negative concerns, with any Oz programme are purely physical.

    1. It is tommorrow night there right now. (Saturday 8:00AM PST as I write this 2 March 2002 in SF - 3 March 2002 down under) (The assingment is do tommorrow, opps today").

    2. It is fall going on winter.

    3. It is a long, exspensive trip to ahve a face to face meeting.

But then some of this applies to any off shore program(me).

    Re: Negative concerns

USQ assignments are always due by midnight GMT on the due date regardless of where a student lives. I don't know about others, but this helps me from getting too crazy doing time zone/dateline conversions in my head.

Australia is really pushing a 12-day trip including airfare and hotel for $2000 on local television stations the last month. Of course, $2000 I don't have with baby now here.

Interesting. So this would be 10 am Toowoomba time the following day.

For me (New York), this would be 7 pm during winter, 8 pm during daylight savings.

The calculation is relatively easy because Queensland doesn't use daylight savings (whereas its neighbour to the south, New South Wales, does).

I hope I live to see the day where all this daylight savings nonsense is done away with worldwide.
