    Hi everyone,

I am really interested in becoming a history major, but I am worried about the job outlook post graduation with that degree. Seeing as how I do not want to become a teacher and would love to be archivist or researcher for government/businesses.

Would it be wise to do an Interdisciplinary Studies program(Looking at Empire State) that includes History + Business(Looking at Economics to go with atm) to put some fears to rest regarding post grad job outlook? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I know this is looking forward, but if you'd like to become an archivist, you could do a history undergrad, and then go on to grad school for public history or library science. I have a friend that did that and she now works for the national archives in DC.

Do most schools offering online degrees allow a person to do a double major? That would seem to be the best solution if it's possible to do so.

Fort Hays State also offers a MLS in History for about $7300; a 31 credit hour program:

I would suggest you look at Western New Mexico University
    WESTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY
and check out their MAIS - two 18 hour concentrations would work well for your plan.

foobessional, you may want to clarify whether you're looking for a master's or bachelor's degree, it sounds to me like you're looking for a bachelor's but people seem to be posting masters level degree suggestions.

thanks for the responses everyone. I am still looking for thoughts on Interdisciplinary programs. Like i said in the original post, I am worried about the job outlook for history majors and seeing whether or not it would be a waste if I did do an interdisciplinary program(such as history+business courses)

There are so many uncertainties that I doubt you will get a direct answer about the viability of the degree you have proposed. For example, I have heard many people on this board say that degrees in English are a waste of time, but I have a full time job with mine, in addition to multiple online adjuncting opportunities. So there is no cut and dried answer.

Having said that, if you are interested in being and archivist or working as a researcher (perhaps in a library, etc.), then you will most likely need to get a MLS anyway (or the equivalent). I doubt you would be competitive in those fields with just a BA, regardless of what it was in. So if you plan to go on to the MLS, then just get the plain old history degree, as it would be more than adequate to move into the MLS program.

Just my .02, which is worth less than it was yesterday.
