Accreditation: ***Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE).

I thought this description was interesting.

Basically it's a long round about description. Most government jobs state that a degree must be "recognized". Recognized = recognition by USDOE and CHEA. The big black HR handbooks are then consulted as well. For instance, DETC is listed in the American Universities and Colleges handbook.

I found this out by consulting with the State Dept. of Personnel, but the County went a step further in their job description. They seem to be well versed in accreditation issues, or at least more than other employers.

I think it would have been a lot faster to say, "An accredited degree"

Boom, just saved the tax payers a dollar.

It is a good thing that LA County puts that out for public information. It also shows that NA degrees are just as accepted for government positions as are RA degrees. This however might not be the same for the private market. But it cuts out all the personal opinions when the government gives a solid description such as this one. Good Find!!!

Except that "accreditation" is not used by some international universities such as some in the UK.

Yes, and I think this is the main point that Abner was trying to make.

Thank you Abner. I get tired of hearing people on this board bashing NA degrees and some even bashing online degrees as though they were worthless. I love it when you bring use evidence supporting the idea that this is not the case.

No problem. I have seen the NA and online learning make great strides in terms of acceptance since I have been a member here, and at some other forums (though this is the best!). When I firsted started DL (snail mail) at the University of Iowa many years ago, it was seen as a joke pretty much (nobody understood the concept). Now that more and more people have obtained DL degrees, and the world has become more technologically advanced, acceptance has increased and continues to increase.

    Have a good one!
