Hello guys, i just signed up here with high hopes that i will finally have found a place where i can get help/advise.

I'm from Malaysia & been working for 5 years not related to Law, but somehow recently I've been thinking about studying Law. I always felt knowing law gives an advantage whether it's related to work or life, and always though one can just study law by reading all the law books & constitutions one can find, but for the past few years i never managed to achieve it. I want to study Law for the sake of knowledge and less about qualifications & becoming a lawyer as in my country i lack certain important criteria (A Levels) to sit for bar exams.

So far the i've only heard of University of London External LLM (100% Exam) & Northumbria University Law School (100% course work), their fees seems reasonable, am hoping you guys out there can recommend me other good programs from other universities in UK & Aussie with fees similiar to these 2 (approx 5000pound).

I only have a UK degree in engineering it seems if i go for London Ex LLM i may need to start from a diploma as looking at their entry requirements it's either LLB or 5 years working exp in related field (i'd assume law).

I've heard that London Ex LLB exams have pretty high standards & passrate are lower compared to 80% rate for London LLM, just wondering are the subjects in LLM easier than LLB, since they study 1 subject (4 sections) each semester as oppose to 4 subjects a year in LLB.

I personally would appreciate coursework + exams compared to 100% of either.

I'm more interested in subjects related more towards commercial:
    1.Contract Law
    2.Tax Law
    3.Company Law
    4.Commercial Law

    5.Trust Law
    6.Financial & Investment Law:speechless:
    7.International Trade Law
    8.Criminal Law

I know most of these subjects are covered in LLB courses, which i was initially thinking about London LLB as we have fulltime/parttime classes held here & it covers wider range of subjects, but apart from entry requirements & me not qualified to sit for bar exams, the tight 3 years schedule of 4 subjects a year with only 1 100% exam held in June really held me back from taking the course as from what i was told even full timers have problem not having sufficient time to prepare for studies :aargh4:.

So guys please help me out here as time is running short to make a decision. I'm really keen on learning law.

I completed both my LLB and LLM through Northumbria University. I also did a year towards the LLB with University of London External which transferred to Northumbria.

In terms of the LLB there are a few options in England, these include:

    Northumbria
    London
    University of East London
Huddersfield (think it may have been discontinued)
Wolverhampton (was disontinued, think they started up again)
Robert Gordon University (in Scotland, not England)
    Open University
    Nottingham Trent University
There is at least one other university (I believe in the North East) that is slipping my mind at the moment.

The distance learning LLM has more options, and I'm pretty sure I once posted a now out of date list here once. Going from memory:

    Northumbria
    London
    Liverpool
    Aberdeen
    Edinburgh
City University Birmingham I think just started ofering one. Try Hibernia College if you can't find it on their site.
    Robert Gordon University
    Staffordshire
    De Montford
    Leicester
    Aberystwyth
    Huddersfield

I'm sure there are more, and I'm guessing a couple of these may have been discontinued, but this should provide you a starting point.

As a side note I will add that studying law externally is a lot of work.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Okay, a little googling later.

The program I couldn't remember was the LLB offered by Teesside through RDI. The distance learning LLB is still on the RDI Hong Kong website. However, the only reference I could find on Teesside website was a story that linked to RDI's website, but this link leads to a University of Wales LLB (subject to validation, so it's new). I am guessing that RDI has replaced the Teesside LLB with the Wales LLB.

A couple more just came to mind, probably not of interest to the OP but I thought I would add them for future searches.

Queen Mary University LLM in communications law or something similar
London Metropolitan University LLM in Maritime Law.

You need to check which law degrees will be recognized where you live. The Robert Gordon LLB is in Scot's Law (the law of Scotland), not English common law.

    Best wishes-----Jim

Thankyou guys for the quick reply, actually as i don't have A levels, i'm not able to sit for bar exams in my country so becoming a lawyer is probably not possible.

I can only afford distance learning with fees around London External, has anyone done any programs that they are satisfied?

I'm thinking of LLM because LLB seems to require full time dedication with the number of subjects to be completed a year. And London LLM seems to have higher passrate than LLB. Only thing is for London LLB i may have to start from a diploma, which makes me wonder if the cost of going tru postgraduate cert -> diploma-> LLM is about the same as going straight for LLM or i have to pay full for all 3 certs?
