Does anyone have reliable data about City University out of Washington? Do they have a good reputation?

    Thanks!:)

I took a couple of accounting courses there in the early 90's. I found them to be expensive and difficult to deal with. There also lose paperwork. You may have better luck, but I would not even consider them.

I can't speak firsthand, but there have been a number of posters who have reported very positive experiences with City U of Washington. They were one of the earlier players offering a BS-CIS and were frequently mentioned on a.e.d., before it turned into a spamfest.

And it is a regionally accredited school, so it will be in nearly 100% of cases a wiser choice than a DETC or unaccredited school. However, depending on your specific interest, there may be other options that would be better. What degree area are you interested in?

Clancy - I did not email you regarding topics on this forum or otherwise. In your email to me you referenced my postings in another thread, "A tad pissed off." As these postings were made at least 5 months ago, they could not be referencing your question posted yesterday - I have yet to master time travel :) If you did, in fact, receive an email that appeared to be from me I would appreciate it if you would contact one of the moderators or administrators and report a software error. I would have sent this message by email but you've disabled that option in your profile. Best of luck in your DL quest.

They are ranked by US news... low.

The reputation of City University in Bellevue, WA is not high. All DE colleges are ranked "low" by US News and World Report. However, USNews ranking system is based on the whims and caprices of traditional academics, who out of fear that DE will threaten their position and livelihood, are prepared to do anything to discredit DE schools. :D :)
Seriously, in my opinion, City U is a good school. Although Bears' Guide does not rank DE schools but its referential integrity will prevent you from choosing the wrong school. I think that the book has many good things to say about the school.

Speaking as someone who has lived in the Seattle area for his entire adult life, I can say that City University enjoys a medium reputation in the Seattle area. City University has several brick and mortar satellite sites in Western Washington and elsewhere. They are quite popular with working adults and the military population, offering many, many classes in several majors during the evening hours. Some pundits in the Seattle college education scene believe that it was the success of City University in attracting students that prompted the University of Phoenix to open up here a couple of years ago.

Way, way back in the early 90's, when I was first considering a MBA, City University was one of the schools I seriously considered. I eventually went with Heriot-Watt due to the entirely distance learning option. At the time, City University offered few if any distance learning classes, and my work schedule does not permit evening classes.

Probably the only negative thing I have consistently heard about City University is that they are considered expensive in terms of the cost per credit hour.

It sounds like City U is a viable option.

My goal is to obtain my Master's in Counseling Psychology. I applied to George Fox University and was accepted; however, my secondary goal is to spend time with my husband and do as much traveling as possible.

Given that constraint, City U or some like DL University would best suit me.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond and for your valuable information!

    Hi Clancy,
Please check out two schools that I attended before you make up your mind:

    Liberty University http://www.liberty.edu

    Capella University http://www.capella.edu

Liberty has a MA in Counseling and I found it to be challenging and marketable. I passed the NBCC licensing exam on the first attempt. They require 48 sh for the degree as most states now require that for licensing.

If you want the MA in Counseling Psychology please look at Capella ... you could do the work in the Humans Services or Psychology departments.

    Hi Clancy,

Beyond Washington, I'm not sure they have any reputation at all. Probably well above 90% of the population (don't you just love made up statistics? This one is probably fairly accurate) have never even heard of the place.

That may or may not be a good thing. There are many, many schools that most folks have never heard of. It doesn't make them bad (or good, for that matter).

I have heard of Capella, though I don't know if they have a main campus -- I've heard only of their DL. I know there are also some excellent state schools with DL programs, but not in counseling.

The nice thing about an available campus is that if I run up against a class that is difficult to comprehend via the internet, I can do a face to face and interact in order to "get it".

The one real plus of going through such a process is that when a choice is made, it's pretty likely it will be the right one.

    Thanks for your help.

Hey, for all that you might as well attend a traditional, large brick-and-mortar! ;)

Yup, if I didn't want the freedom to travel, the traditional brick and mortar university would be my first choice!:)
