I would like to know anything relevant to the credentials and substance of the American Military University in Virginia. They claim to be state licensed and DETC accredited. Is this a legitimate school?

If I were to enroll in one of the graduate MA programs would I be able to receive any financial aid, grants, or loans?

Anyone's experience would be helpful and appreciated. Their web site is www.amunet.edu

AMU is definitely a legitimate school. I suspect that eventually they will become regionally accredited. Their first time through the RA process, they did not qualify. They are presently in the process of trying to fix some of their areas of concern. None of that should affect you as a student, though.

The advantage to them seems to be a quite focused curriculum. Although they offer degrees in a number of areas, their areas of strength are obviously military and security issues.

As to financial aid, I don't believe that they are able to offer any except for VA benefits (which can include tuition assistance) and tuition reimbursement programs for federal employees and private companies.

    Tom,

My professors and classes have been outstanding.

I have been an AMU student for almost two years. I am currently taking my tenth and eleventh classes. I will graduate with a BA in Military Management after completing this semester.

Active duty military, using tuition assistance, can complete an undergraduate degree at just about no cost.

I have nothing but good things to say about AMU. You should, however be aware that DETC accreditation is often not well-regarded. This may or may not be an issue for you. Do you plan on pursuing additional graduate study after completing your masters? Some RA schools might not recognize your AMU MA because of its accreditation.

Some schools, Capella and Liberty in particular are more welcoming to graduates from DETC accredited schools. I have been conditionally (pending graduation) accepted for Liberty University's External MBA program.

AMU has broadened its undergraduate degree offerings a great deal in the past two years. When I started the BA was offered in three basic fields Management, Intelligence and History. This is the case at the graduate level as well. You might want to look at:

    Good School. Heading there myself.
They are a member of ACE.
    www.acenet.edu.

Have the tuition assistance and if your employer
has an assistance plan then that should also help.
Most of your large Corp's will reimburse schools
    listed by ACE

    Good Luck

I am wondering how long before they are RA? Does anyone know if credits earned through this school would be transferable to Excelsior, TESC, or COSC? Does AMU accept Dantes, Clep, etc? If anyone could provide me with more information it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!:)

    Take care,

    Matt,

    1. How long before they are RA? Time will only tell.

"In 1998, we spent two years on our first application to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In June of 1999 the application went before their board. Although AMU met the requirements of the majority of the SACS conditions, there were some elements of our program they wanted us to change. We have been making consistent progress toward those goals and plan to submit another application when our enrollment is sufficient to support the SACS requirement for full time faculty."
