I would like to know how to go about becoming an online adjunct teacher. I have a Masters degree in Social Work but absolutely no teaching experience. What certification programs are required and where are they offered to get started learning to teach online at any school but preferably an online technical school, college or university. I know I will have to start at the bottom with low pay but just do not know how to get started. Does anyone have any advice?

I suggest you apply to as many schools as possible and see what happens. I would highlight any teaching experience you have or mentoring experience. Anything that can show you can teach others.

Find the schools that offer programs in what you want to teach and start the resume machine. With a Masters in Social Work what do you plan to teach at a technical university? Most schools require a minimum of 18 grad credits in a specialty area. Are you sure you have relevant qualifications?

Highlight your job experiences. Based on my limited experience most of the adjuncts I know (online and at b&m institutions) are the SME's in their respective fields. They may lack that Ph.D at the end of their name but they've been working in their field for 10-20 years. I would think the "teaching experience" portion would eventually come along as you gain the necessary experience. Good luck to you.

Volunteer somewhere that needs someone to provide training to groups. Voilà, you have teaching experience.

You might try teaching an onsite class at a local community college, if you can find the opportunity to do so. That teaching experience will help. After teaching a course or two, they might let you have an online class, thereby giving you online experience as well.

Their are several online BSW programs out there. Also, almost every online school has an intro to sociology, intro to psychology and the like. You might get a bite there as well.

My behavioral science professor had an MSW, so it's not impossible to teach a separate, but related subject.
