The Dilemma

Need some sound advice folks from all sides, not just the DL'ers, but B&Ms too.

    Here is my dilemma:

I currently hold a M.Ed. (from Northeastern University) I am active military, and can retire after 20, if I want too starting late this year, but can ride it out for another 10 if I desire. I am at terminal pay grade for enlisted. So,.... I may want to go into government civil service, perhaps teach at the college level, or just find something comparable in pay. Not quite sure yet. I do however, still have plenty of tuition and VA assistance available, so I'd like to continue my schooling before I retire. I truly enjoy it and all of my studies to-date have had relevance on the job.

    Here are my current options:

    1. Pursue another Masters degree?
-- Already accepted into Villanova University (HRD) & can start in Sept.
-- Considering applying to Northeastern University (MBA) *AACSB accredited*
**Both schools are B&M, ranked and well respected, NCAA competitors, etc...

    2. Pursue a Doctoral degree?
-- Applied and NOT accepted for Northeastern University (Ed.D) :(
-- Apply to Capella or Walden? I chatted with both briefly on the phone. Both seem similar, but have some oddities when it comes to qrtly payments, residencies, comp tests and dissertations. Both are Ph.D Management related degrees, as that is more my specialty than edu.
**Have not taken GRE or GMAT, not required for any of the above, to include Masters.
**Have not truly invested research in a B&M doctoral degree, some of the particulars, like admissions and residencies are outside my reach due to constantly moving, etc in the military.

So, would you hire me as a Northeastern & Villanova (masters) graduate --or-- a Capella/Walden (Ph.d) graduate? Suppose then, my dilemma is whether I go with B&M at a lower level or go fully-online at the higher level?

By the way, I am also a huge NCAA sports viewer. I love the whole-college concept from instruction thru sports, to include ballcaps, t-shirts and decals. Suppose that could have a personal bearing as well. You don't necessarily get that with fully-online schools.

Any advise or mentoring would be nice. Thanks!!

In your case, considering another masters degree could be an option only if you know that the second masters would help you in the future. In most cases if you have an option between a B&M and an all online program, I would recommend going with the B&M degree (even if it is online). If you are going to consider an option of teaching in the future I would consider the doctorate degree because that will most likely put you at a competitive position against other candidates. All the universities you mentioned are great and have solid programs. If you are still open to looking at universities, I would actually recommend Liberty University for a doctorate degree. They have a very strong program in education. The only thing with that program is you have to attend the intensives at the campus ( I think there are 3-5). The university offers the program online but also has a good sized B&M campus. You can check out the program:

So either if you go with another masters degree or not, to be a good candidate for a teaching position you are going to have to get a doctorate degree.

You won't be able to come to a reliable answer until you decide what you want the degree to do for you. Government, civil service, teaching is really quite vague. What branch of government? What area of civil service? Teaching what subject?

True... that is still part of my dilemma.

Currently USN and would probably go USN gov civil service in either the mgt, edu, or hr fields, as I qualify for most. I'd also like to teach in any of those fields too. Have years of experience in all three. Bulk of grad credits are edu, but have more experience in mgt, as that is what I do day-to-day. Hr experience has increased in last few years. I do enjoy it...so far.

As for Walden Univ, I like their Ph.D in Management w/ HRM emphasis. Both the core and electives would help me in day-to-day work, plus probably get me in a higher pay grade/bands in the gov civil service. I am sure I can come up with some topics to do a dissertation about too. The military/government always have some area of emphasis to get better at. :)

Oh, thanks for the Liberty Uni link Shal916!
