I completed the Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Continuing Education certificate from the University of Florida.
It took about 90 minutes, cost $30, and counts for 3 CEUs.

This is a great resume booster and has some excellent information for anyone that works in healthcare (or any field really).

Has anyone found out how to put CEU's to work towards a some sort of degree program? IF so, I would be in.

Seems like the credits would need to be ACE reviewed in order to have any shot at this.

Short answer - no. At least I don't know of any. A few years back, there were threads on most DL fora on this subject. Attempts were made to discover a relationship between CEU's and credit hours. In short, no formula was established. I do not remember any accredited institution that would alchemically transmute CEUs into college credit. If there were possibly one or two -- then I have forgotten. (I'm old!) I can categorically state that there was none whatsoever found that would do so on an organized, consistent, quasi-predictable basis.

There were people who thought they could take their 180 CEUs and exchange them at TESC or Excelsior for 120 credits and a Bachelor's. Nope - never happened!

The conclusion at the time was that the utility of CEU's was pretty much confined to the professional bodies (e.g. health care) that required specific continuing education courses for members to remain qualified.

That said, things could always change. I agree with dlcurious. If the profession-related, CEU-denominated credits were for courses that were also ACE-reviewed, I guess they could result in college credit -- but 'way back when, I don't remember any posters offering examples of this dual credit. If there are such - lots of people would like to hear about them - including me.

Since we are talking about healthcare related certificates:
Always keep in mind the Harvard option:
Harvard Medical School - Online CME
Lots of course options, interesting subjects and a nice looking official Harvard Certificate. No CEUs unfortunately.

Just finished the Root Cause Analysis Cert. Ended up being actually more interesting than I expected. Thanks for bringing that one up Randell.

  9. For $30 I had to try this :). I agree with Woho, it was much more interesting than I expected.

Sounds very interesting. Is the course medical field specific? As RCA could be used across disciplines, I could see this being beneficial to anyone in an analyst/research role, not just in the healthcare field.

  11. It's quasi medical field specific. The content itself isn't field specific, but the examples and cases have a medical focus.

The certificate does not make any explicit references to the health care/medical field. The only aspects one could see as "indicators" are the note that "This program has been approved by the Florida Board of Nursing for 3 contact hours." and that the signature is from "The University of Florida
    http://health.dce.ufl.edu".
Would love to see more bargain certs posted around here. Missing a bit Degreeinfo's certificate guru Michael Gates ;)

Yes - if you pursue credit by the portfolio route CEUs would supplement your experience - but I doubt if a CEUs alone will get you any academic credit.

The course was 45 minutes and $30 but it is gone and yes you did get a certificate. The link now takes you to a 120 hour program. It is something like the graduate certificate I completed from UF.

It seems to me that this cert could be used, along with other information and narrative, to earn credit via a life long learning portfolio.
