Basically, I want to earn a degree from CUNY's online program in business. They accept up to 90 CLEP credits, but require 30 credits from their program to earn a degree. However, they need a GPA, which I understand that nobody assigns a letter grade for passing CLEP. I haven't taken any CLEP tests yet, but I plan to take them and bank them with Excelsior's OneTranscript service. So...is there an affordable way take courses to get a GPA for admittance to the CUNY program? I understand that DANTES are assigned grades by Excelsior...but CUNY does not accept them. Any ideas? I'm a newbie to all of this.

According to their website, CUNY accepts a maximum of 30 units earned via CLEP testing.

Thanks for that information. Saved me a load of headaches. I talked to a rep over the phone and she told me they accept up to 90 credits. I even chatted online with another rep and she said the same thing, although she did say that they needed a GPA.

Guess I will just settle with Excelsior and be done with it.

If you have lots of CLEP credits then you take one class at your city college and get an "A", wouldn't you then show a GPA of 4.0? I think that would work and it's what I would do if I were you.

90 CLEP? Wow, well, even if that were true, those credits will not likely match your college's distribution. In other words, if you need 12 credits in humanities, they won't allow you to use 12 CLEP credits to meet that requirement unless those specific 12 are from humanities. It doesn't seem possible, to me, that there are 90 CLEP/DSST credits in perfect distribution for a business degree. Liberal arts - maybe- but not business. I think the business core alone is going to exceed 30 credits. I'm not a business person, so maybe I'm off on that.

In any event, you want a GPA. GPA is earned at the school you take the class. So, as suggested, you could take a class anywhere and get a graded credit. When CUNY (or whoever) brings that credit into your new program, your likely only going to have transfer credit (no grade) and so your 30 CUNY credits will ultimately make up your graduating GPA.

I'm also confused about the GPA requirement. Why would an undergrad program ask for undergrad credit to gain admission? Doesn't that shoot themselves in the foot ($)? But, if you are credit-less at this point, I'd suggest starting on the 30 credit requirement while you take your CLEPs. If you take them in house, they'll count for admissions as well as for your degree.

Again, I'd double check that 90/30 and the GPA for admission - unless they mean high school transcript.

    Ok, now I understand.

Link to the program: B.S. in Business Courses

That link shows the 60 credit business major, it doesn't show you the 60 credit general education distribution. That degree is 120 credits, not 60 as shown. Here are the remainig 60 credits required:

    http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/s-5332371/cmd/kbresource/kb-3739817234701640113/view_question!PAGETYPE?sc=59&sf=101133&documentid=390347&action=view

So, new answer for you. You earn your GPA by doing your first 60 credits at CUNY (or elsewhere like a community college). Then, based on your GPA, you'll be allowed (or not) to apply to the business dept for your major. You won't actually apply to "this" part of the program until you'are already a CUNY student working on your other 60 credits.
