I am new to this discussion board and I am sure you have probably already discussed this topic, but I need help.

I have a B.A. (Bible) and M.A. (Ministry) from regionally accredited schools and I have recently learned about all of the distance ed possibilities in South Africa-primarily the Ph.D. programs.

If the school is accredited by SAQA will it be recognized by the U.S.?

The University of Zululand offers a distance Ph.D. program for less than $1,000 U.S.? Can this be possible? http://www.uzulu.ac.za

    Greetings Tom,

The SAQA issue is interesting and I am not sure that anyone has come up with a definitive answer.

As for the University of Zululand...it is a legitimate equivalent of accredited university. If you go to the South African Dept. of Education site it is one of their state universities. Do a yahoo search and you will pull up many references to it (most graduates seem to be in science/technical areas.

The cost is accurate as well. Very inexpensive & with the Rand rate a good value.

Because you mentioned SAQA I assume that you might be going through SA Theological Seminary for a UNIZUL qualification. Both organizations are very helpful and customer service oriented. I would defintely choose to go get the UNIZUL degree because no one seems sure what a SAQA accredited SA Theological Seminary degree would mean.

So, although UNIZUL is odd sounding to Western ears it is GAAP (equivalent of accredited). Remember that to someone in South Africa Slippery Rock College, University of Wallongong (??), or University of Saskatchewan might sound funny.

  3. I suggest you take a look at the thread on South African university merger proposals. While the South African Ministry of Education is not particularly concerned about distance programs in theology and the like, there is a possibility that the programs in theology and religion at Unizul may be impacted by several suggested changes. First, there is a proposal that the University of Zululand itself cease to operate as a traditional university and refocus instead on vocational training. Second, public/private programs have come under a baleful glare, and this (although aimed primarily at for-profit programs in the education and business fields) may ultimately affect the Unizul/SATS relationship.

    distance ed opportunities

Hello, I'm curious about potential masters programs. Anyone have any experience they would like to share. The prices seem extremely reasonable. Have a good week. Hille

    Re: distance ed opportunities

No but I suspect it works much the same way. Professor Song and the Theology faculty are very helpful and responsive. Bill Highsmith has familiarity with other departments.
