    Hey,

Just to update anyone interested in a business degree from AMU/APU. On May 4th they just received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs (ACBSP) :veryhappy:. That's a big deal even if it is 2nd tier compared to AACSB. Maybe that's why tuition is going up yet again!

Just to give you some insight. Just because the school now carries the accreditation does not mean your degree does. You need to have the degree path evaluated by the school to be certain that your degree meets whatever possible changes may have taken place to reach that accreditation. if you do not have your degree re-evaluated it does not actually carry the accreditation (not that any employer would readily know this but still)

I'm sure by "2nd tier compared to AACSB" you meant in popular perception right? I ask because I personally do not believe that AACSB and ACBSP or IACBE are necassarily interchangable since they are entirely different business program certifications. IACBE and ACBSP are student centric on learning and outcomes, AACSB is oriented towards faculty and research. Personally I think ACBSP or IACBE would be better for the students whereas AACSB might be better for the faculty. Hopefully one day AACSB will be seen more for what it really is rather than the standard on business accreditation but I guess since they were the first... Anywhoo...this is great news for APUS/AMU.

I know hair-splitting is what we do around here, but I'm not terribly worried about obtaining such a re-evaluation. If it were that big of a deal to me, I would have chosen a different program in the 1st place. I just think it's an added bonus, acquired through sheer luck rather than any sort of planning. But I thank you for your explanation. I certainly appeciate the detailed analysis (I'm a lawyer, after all).

Good for AMU/APU! Secondary (i.e. discipline-specific) accreditation is a good thing for any institution. I wouldn't worry much about the comparisons with AACSB. The emphases of the accrediting bodies are different. If you are not looking for a faculty position at an AACSB-happy institution, ACBSP or IACBE will be fine.

ACBSP - Do employers know about it and make hiring decisions based on the accreditation by ACBSP?

I think its more known in academic world, just an opinion.

I've been a hiring manager for 10 years...and I know the difference. But does it play heavily in hiring decisions? Not a bit, nor should it IMHO. If you're really down to weighing the differences in college accreditation between two applicants then you're not screening your applicants well enough. Just sayin....

Excellent point friendorfoe. The college degree is the last thing we look at on a resume at my company. We are only hiring people with 5+ years of experience though and they are non-executive and non-management positions but they are highly paid professional developer positions.

I say 2nd tier because that's what I was taught on this forum. I was brainwashed to believe it. But I like your explanation :) .

Oh. didn't know that. I hope that since I am under the New catalog requirements that my degree will be ACBSP. It would seem to be, but I shouldn't assume. I will ask my counselor or the Director of the Business Dept. She was my last professor so I can just email her.

Not to split hairs but I have seen something (don't remember if it was for a facility position, corporate position, or admission into a PhD program) that said the student must have graduated from an AACSB program and have enrolled in the program after it obtained AACBS accreditiation. This would eliminate anyone that gambles on a school getting accreditation. Again, seen it once and don't remember where.

It was confirmed by the MBA program director that " All MBA graduates will be under the umbrella of the School of Business special accreditation".
