Hello, I have been looking at PhD BA/DBA programs. I am active duty military and have 5 years until retirement. So I would like to continue on in school and set myself up for success for when I do retire. My question is about residency, how important is it if I decide to teach? Two school I have looked at so far are Capella and TUI. Capella has a residency requirement and TUI does not. Any info/help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I'm currently enrolled in TUI's Ph.D. (business Admin) program. What kind of info are you looking for?

I would listen to Dr. Pena. My two cents is that the fact of requiring a residency is a little less important than the reputation of the school. In this case all three are DL institutions. If you want to teach at a Nationally Accredited school or maybe a community college or University of Phoenix or NCU, these degrees may be of assistance. You are going to find it more difficult I would imagine to break into tenured academia at a State University where it is very competitive and a degree from a bricks and mortar RA school (even if earned by DL) would be of more value (as would working with professor X). Not to say it may not help you secure am adjunct job.

Have you investigated Valdosta (spelling is off)? They are a bricks and mortar school with a DPA? If you are using military benefits have you checked to see if Liberty U has anything or Regents. Both are bricks and mortar and both have dl PhDs. I think Liberty was pretty good about keeping a lot of religion out of their DL programs. Both would be requiring some campus time but it would be at their real b&m campus and not an office building or rented campus for the summer.

I am not sure what specifically you are interested in except it appears business oriented.

Regents University is B&M, military friendly and does require residencies (3 in PhD program and each appears a week long).
Academics - School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship - Regent University They have a doctorate in Strategic Leadership and a PhD in Organization Leadership

Liberty's doctoral programs appear to be EdD focused on Ed Leadership

Grand Canyon University founded in 1949 has DBA and EdD programs available through the Ken Blanchard School of Business. They are available online (GCU has a campus in AZ). Not sure about residency. Tuition is 585 per credit hour. Appears they may have given a break to military and are military friendly (possibly 385 per hour - depends how they define graduate program). Regional Accreditation AND ACBSP accreditation.

Let us know what you decide. Someone who knows more about business offering may want to put in their 2 cents. Are you using TA or VA?
