I am writing to inquire if a Distance Education or On-Line Ph.D Degree in Hitory is available in the US or World Wide that is accredited?. Could you e-mail me back if you know of a college who does offer a Distance Education or On-Line Ph.D Degree in History.

I'm not aware of any U.S.-based programs in history (with the exception of the Union Institute where you could do it in history or basketweaving or thermonuclear dynamics). As for overseas,
Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning (www.tenspeed.com) lists a few including U. of Wales-Lampeter, University of New England, University of Kent at Canterbury, Charles Sturt, as well as a number of others.

If you're looking for a completely online U.S.-based program, I'm afraid you're probably out of luck for the time being; there are some low-residency programs that may interest you (one of the lowest-residency options being the Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Transformation, or suchlike, offered by the California Institute for Integral Studies), but nothing entirely online. If you deal with a non-U.S. institution, your options multiply at least tenfold--but residency is seemingly always negotiated on a student-by-student basis (except at institutions, such as UNISA/OLUSA, that advertise as completely nonresident), and you'll likely be dealing with an entirely different doctorate model, the research doctorate (where you basically spend 4-6 years on a single project).

I second Other Tom's suggestion: Get thee to a Bears' Guide. You (probably) won't regret it.

    Cheers,

Let me respond by quoting from a thread I opened sometime ago and elaborating upon it (since my interest are similar):
    ---------------------------
Anyone here have any contact with Syracuse University's ISDP (Independent Study Degree Program) MSS (Master of social science) program?
    It's at:
    <http://www.suce.syr.edu/isdp/mssc/index.html>
    Very thorough.

I looked at Syracuse many years ago when they had more programs offerings. My impressions were; 1)Flawless reputation, 2)Excellent programs, and 3)Fiercely expensive.

The SU ISDP MSSprogram lets you either study history, poly sci, or a combination thereof. The history profs in it are also in the history department's program (not just the Maxwell School of
    Communications).

Another bet is at the University of London's Institute for United States Studies, where they expect to open the MA to distance study by 2003--you can leave your email to receive updates (I suspect they will be open to applications by this Fall; see their regular MA web pages.
(It looks roughly the same as an MA in American Studies, but rather more traditional than similar US offerings--an advantage if your preferrences aren't so PC!--since their core courses emphasize history, American Pol thought, and US/British Dip relations instead of Tony Morrison, feminism, and literary deconstruction, and Black Studies...

That's Toni Morrison (who won the blooming Nobel Prize, so there's more to recommend her than political correctness); and any master's program in American political thought that doesn't incorporate feminism and the African-American experience would be like an American history program that stops with John Adams.

NOT to pick a fight, but...

    TOM.

Do I recollect rightly? I recall reading a story (NYTimes, The Atlantic, or Wash Post) last December arguing that the Nobel Academy only rarely picks first rate writers (Pearl Buck,
Selma Lagerlof), and often misses the best or most memorable (Orwell, D. H. Lawrence).

I'm afraid I regard TonI Morrison as belonging to the former undistinguished group--not the latter.

It's the curse of recognizing artistic merit by committee.

    MA/PhD in History

I am doing an MA at www.une.edu.au

This can rollover into a PhD on completion - entry to the PhDwould depend on what you currently have degree wise.

It would be a 75-100K pure research degree.

    The address is www.une.edu.au/arts/History/
    Email address [email protected]

Application dates are September 1 to October 31

At UNE all PhD's must go through the PhD office - not through the faculty - they only support it

Good luck - an excellent but rigorous DE university.

Re: Re: Online or Distance Education Ph.D in History

The history PhD degree at Unisa is the D. Litt et Phil and as you say will take some time to complete and is on a single topic as most degrees of this nature are on this model in the Commonwealth.

I would hesitate to use the title OLUSA until the court battles are over in RSA (and the writing campaign ceases by students and faculty) since Unisa refuses to go along with the name change which was an arbitrary choice of the Minister of Education.

    UofL rollover to PHd

Thanks for the U of L info, Orson.

I wonder if they would "rollover" an MA into a PHd (with the appropriate dissertation) for me, like UNE will. I already have an MEd.
