    Hi All,

Guess the subject line just about says it all. Can anyone recommend a suitable institution that is completely DL and is also reasonably priced? I've spent more than six months sending out applications that have all been rejected on the basis that there isn't a suitably qualified supervisory team. My experience seems to suggest that there are lots of places and people that *say* they're working in this field, but few who actually are!

    Thanks!

I'm also interested in the subject and have looked around for the same thing. Curtin University of Technology, in Australia, http://smi.curtin.edu.au/internet/internet.html has a PhD in Internet Studies program via DL where cyberculture studies could be supported. The departments of Information Studies (formerly in the School of Social Sciences), Film and Television and Journalism (in Communication and Cultural Studies) were brought together in the new School of Media and Information. Internet Studies and the new area, Media Studies, also became part of this new school.

I've had some email conversations with Dr. Matthew Allen, who heads up the program, and he informed me that one could pursue an emphasis in most areas of Internet Studies including cyberculture. The program looks very comprehensive and afforable. They also offer graduate certificates and a Master of Internet Studies.

Another very impressive program is the PhD in Communication from The European Graduate School http://www.egs.edu/

The EGS is mostly DL with limited 4-week summer residency in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. The faculty are some of the most significant philosophers, anothopologists, and visionaries in the field of cyberspace studies: Donna Haraway, Peter Greenaway, Carl Mitcham, and many others. I took a graduate course in Science & Technology Studies at Penn State some years ago under Carl Mitcham.

    Some other interesting Cyberculture sites:

Best of luck and keep us informed what you find out and/or do.

I second the Curtin recommendation; I considered the program myself, and it was one of the very few cases where the supervisor up-and-said "Yes, we can do this program on a completely nonresident basis" (which makes a great deal of sense, given the field). Former AED regular Lawrene France is currently a candidate in the program, with about two years left until graduation. I don't have her e-mail address handy, but a search on Google's "Groups" page should turn it up.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

    Thanks for the advice.

Curtin looks great but I'm afraid it's way out of my price range. Looking at the prospectus, it looks like the annual cost will be around £2,600 (around $3,800). I was hoping to find somewhere that offers lower tuition fees, like UNISA. It's a pity because Curtin looks as if it could offer me exactly what I want.

Europe, unfortunately, is also unsuitable for me. One of the reasons for wanting 100% DL is that I can't travel because of illness.

    Thanks again.

Using two different currency conversion sites, 2600 OZ dollars = 1343.0300 US dollars. How did you figure 3800 US dollars?

My guess is he converted British pounds to US dollars rather that Australian dollars to US dollars.
