Long story short: I am an instructor with a MA degree interested in taking on more administrative responsibilities at my university. For numerous reasons, I am not interested at this point in my life in completing a PhD program.

My Department Chair/mentor wants to support my candidacy but our university requires doctoral-level coursework. Therefore, she shrewdly advised me to still ENROLL in a PhD program, even if I never finish it, because I would still be considered for advancement opportunities if I am PURSUING a PhD.

Here's what I'm looking for -- and hopefully someone on the forum can reply with a lead -- or a few:

    1. Easy and quick entrance requirements
    2. Humanities or Arts or Education program
    3. Cheapest
    4. RA and Distance Learning

Does it absolutely have to be regionally accredited? Otherwise the programs at Harrison Middleton University would sound perfect:

Doctor of Arts Degree Program - Harrison Middleton University
Doctor of Education Degree Program - Harrison Middleton University

    They're nationally accredited by DETC.

Are you ex-military by chance? if so, Liberty is a great option as they charge roughly 750 a course for military. I'm biased but I have thorougly enjoyed my time there. On the other hand, depending on the climate of your school it may also be a negative as well...

I agree with Ruble. Liberty University, a conservative Christian university, offers the lowest priced, regionally accredited doctorate that I have been able to find. Starting from a master's, the EdD program is about $28K. If you are military or ex-military the price will be lower. Deducting the automatic pay raise from my employer from tuition cost, I'll get through it for about $14K.

Liberty does require a MAT or a GRE test for entrance.

Since you mentioned an education concentration, and requiring doctoral level coursework, would an EdD program, instead of a PhD program, work for you?

This should never be a problem. Anyone who has already completed a Masters degree should at the very least be able to walk in off the street and get a decent score on the GRE. I took it cold without even so much as looking at test questions, and scored a 1080. And I consider myself to be decidely average in every way.

Northeastern and Memphis both compare to this...

...but I don't know whether they have discounts for specific groups like this.

I agree, I have taken a few of these tests cold and have always scored somewhere in the 90 - 93rd percentile. However, I disagree that you are average in every way. I think you must be above average to walk in and do as well as you did. Give yourself some credit, you are a smart person!

    ** UPDATE ** (I am the OP)

Thanks for these leads. I investigated all of them and there are some great programs but the cost was a bit too high. At my annual evaluation my lack of a doctorate came up again. So the university sweetened the deal by cutting some of my workload in order to give me an opportunity to pursue a PhD (they recommended low-residency). I plan to begin searching the forums this weekend when I have more time, but am wondering if anyone knows of the cheapest low-residency program for a PhD in Humanities.

(P.S. I hate asking for the "cheapest", but with airfare & tuition that is the reality of my situation)

    Thank you!

You might check out Indiana Univ of Pennsylvania's PhD in English program. It has summer residency requirements. I have no idea of cost. THe Faulkner D.Litt is pretty cheap. Even out of pocket, it is only about $20K, including the cost of books. I doubt you will find a US degree significantly cheaper (and still be RA, etc.). Since you don't have to factor in residencies, it would compare even more favorably.
