    Hello out there!

First I wanted to start my study at the Open University (UK), but this probably becomes a very expensive way from 2012... Of course I know that american or canadian universities (which provide distance learning courses) are not necessarily cheaper, but I would like to know all my possibilities.

    What I'm interested in:
    - English language
    - Modern languages (french, spanish, italian)
    - or maybe linguistics

Is there somebody who passed / passes a undergraduate study like this and has a suggestion for me?

    Regards from Germany

Also, you might look into the SUNY university system of New York. Empire State in particular. They offer a couple of interesting English majors and they are relatively inexpensive.

UNISA is one of the few colleges that actually have degrees at all levels in Linguistics. They are also one of the most affordable colleges in the entire world.

Maniac Craniac is arguably the best expert we have on linguistics here on Degree Info.

Considering that there are about 3 of us, and my relative position as "best" is arguable, I don't believe that statement is saying much. :dunce:

I have been trying hard to compile degrees for the language professions, but they are not in English nor Modern Languages. In fact, my intention was to not include those types of degrees, but degrees that look at language itself in a general context (like Linguistics). Here is the thread: http://www.degreeinfo.com/distance-learning-discussions/37488-study-language.html?highlight=the+study+of+language

Of course I already encountered the UNISA, but I have some doubts about this university...

At first, I'm worried that employers will ask me with a raised eyebrow why I choosed a university in South Africa instead of a "more western" university. I don't know how american employers think about UNISA, but in Germany it's unknown as far as possible.

And then I have no idea of the quality of the course books. Are they well-structured? Ambitious as I await from a university? The UNISA-homepage is very unclear and email-contact just works if you are already registered and request a student-ID. (Before that I got no answer to my email.) If the learning material follows the same style I will get into a fine mess!
I read that UNISA has a good reputation (worldwide) again and again (in this forum, too), but I can't find any reasons for that statement.

It would help me if I could get more information by current UNISA-student or somebody who already passed his graduation there.

University of London sounds great to me, but I found that students seem to be very unsatisfied with the support... Besides, I have no A-level, but a german "advanced technical college entrance qualification". That means I would have to take the "access route", which lasts one year longer (in advance).

Well, I've just written a mail to the UoL. Maybe I could apply without that access route.

Thanks also for the link to the "Study of Language"-thread. I already found that, but it has no applicable opportunity for me.

Maybe I could warm for a BSc International (Business) Relatins. I guess, there would be more choice, right?
