I have to decide pretty soon on if I want to do a thesis or a professional project in my Masters in Justice Management program at University of Nevada-Reno via distance learning. The only difference is 1. length of paper (Pro project is 40pages thesis much longer) 2. credits you take 3 vs 6 and 3. the pro project doesn't require you to collect original data. You can but its not required.

So what are the advantages of doing a thesis? Why should I choose one over the other? Anyone been here and what was your choice?

If you plan to work in the field, it would seem that a professional project would be more practical. If you plan to pursue doctoral-level studies, then the thesis would be good preparation for further research.

That being said, it is not as if you would be unable to pursue doctoral-level studies after completing the project.

A thesis would likely take more time to complete. This could mean more expense.

I would opt for the project.

I will also have to make that decision soon and I am leaning towards the thesis. For me, my choice goes back to 2 factors. First, I might (and I say might, not will ) pursue a DPA and some schools prefer a thesis for admissions purposes. Second, it is a matter of personal preference. I have been working in the field in which I am doing my MPA for over 5 years. I do a "professional project" every working day! There is little challenge and no mystery in it for me. I would much rather do something different, more academic and get to study in depth something I am really interested in.

I would echo from Stefan. If you plan for a Doctorate level in the future, then the thesis is the winner. Because certain academic institutions out there require sample research for the admission. However, if you do not plan to go any further, then a Professional Project would be better in your resume in terms of career wide.

At this point I have no desire to get a doctorate. However I do wonder if I should do the thesis just in case I change my mind in 3-4 or 8 years. But man oh man I am not sure I want to take on a thesis.....lol
