My daughter's friend is asking me to find the best online program for a BA in Communications. What can you tell me?

Also my personal question: What can you do with that degree? Will she be able to get a job? I'm dubious.

CUNY School of Professional Studies has a BA in Communication and Culture. Online B.A. In Communication Culture It is an eclectic degree with an interesting mix of courses.

SUNY Empire State College has BA in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Communications (or, a unique personalized concentration including communications can be created.) http://www.esc.edu/esconline/online2.nsf/html/whatcanistudy.html

Each of the Big 3 has a degree in Communications. Excelsior's has several concentrations one can choose from.

    Distance Learning

    Montana State
    MSUB Online

The only people that I know who were "communicators" are in the radio field. They worked long hours for small pay, did all the scut work, etc. They got to do the radio shows when everyone else was on vacation (Christmas, etc.) and they worked like hell to network with every person on the planet who might conceivably help them into a decent position. They're all employed in their field and are obsessed with blogs and keeping track of "guess who just got hired at ____?" They're always tired and always seem happy. As far as I can tell it's not a career track for a laid back underachiever. Oh, maybe the most important thing, your internships mean everything. You run for coffee, you totally kiss everyone's ass, you do everything that you're told to do (and do it before you're told) and you'll get a good reference which is worth it's weight in gold in that field.

The only one that comes to my mind is from University of Louisville.

Bachelor of Arts in Communication — University of Louisville

I know there are more because I have seen them while looking at various programs myself!! I need to start creating a list of all online colleges I find and what they offer as I typically look for B&M schools with online options....

Johns Hopkins and UNC-Chapel Hill both offer communications degrees via distance. It tends to be a bit of a joke major, a lot of athletes major in comm which gives it a bad rap. At Auburn it was all athletes and sorority girls. I have one close friend from Auburn that was a Comm major and she is now the press secretary for a US congressman and makes a solid living, but the pay starting out was really really low. They pay tends to be terrible starting out, like under $30k a year bad.

Sorry, the programs I referenced are graduate programs.

I'm enrolled in the BA in Communications program at Excelsior College, and yes I used to be a news reporter and now work in public relations. What everyone has said about working in radio and TV is true: long hours and low pay. However, I loved the work, but it's not for everybody.

What can someone do with a degree in communications? You can really apply communications to just about any career field out there, but the most common areas would be business communications and public relations. You could even make an argument that a degree in communications would be applicable to a career in sales, which can be lucrative if someone is good, but of course you don't need a degree to work in sales.

Thanks MC! It's interesting that she has already told her friend about SUNY because that's where she thinks she will go.
