University Of The People is tuition free (seemingly a legitimate online post-secondary effort) … but I don’t believe they offer biblical studies /courses.

“The University is in the process of preparing the necessary materials to apply for accreditation from an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. At this time, no assurances can be given as to when, or if, accreditation might be granted.”

Note: Apparently, Moderators can delete their own postings (?)… My response had included SurfDoctor’s quote. Oh well, no big deal, everyone makes mistakes from time-to-time. Bottom-line, Global University is accredited, having both regional and national accreditation; and it’s not tuition free.

There are not a lot of free programs out there.

    i) NationsUni has been mentioned. They are seriously working on accreditation and revamping programs. Church of Christ affiliated. Sincere effort. Grads have been accepted into accredited programs (note: no guarentee you would).

ii) North Amercan Reformed Seminary. Uses older academc texts available on line (free). Program is free. Most of the degrees require a lot of credit hours and a lot of writing. Faculty mentors seem generally well credentialed depending on what they try to mentor students in. Graduates are eligible for ordination in some well respected Reformed denominations. Seminary is endorsed by a couple of promiment reformed theologians. Drawbacks include the lack of accreditation and one of their doctoral progams is weak. They offer a 33 credit hour Doctor of Div degree that requires a Masters for entrance (this is not enough credit hours for a doctorate requiring any Masters for entry AND the DD is not an academic degree). DMin programs look good. | The North American Reformed Seminary

iii) Trinity School of Apologetics and Seminary. Mentioned on another thread. Indian seminary. Unaccredited. Once claimed accreditation from an Indian accreditor that was not meaningful in terms of being what we would consider accreditation. Plus side is that I have read they require a lot of work (though volume is not a guarentee of academic soundness). Negative is that we do not know what they use for texts (once recall someone mentioning Kent Hovind and if so he has no credibility as an academic). No reports of students getting into accredited programs based on their degree. Was hoping someone who was in the program might post but they did not. The program is free but in terms of learning, it is an unknown commodity. Plus programs (doctoral) seem oddly designed. A ThD is a high level doctorate for someone with an MDiv (90 credit hours) plus MTh. Theirs requires any Masters (in other words ThD does not meet norms in the US).

iv) Freelandia Seminary - Have not researched much. Faculty not listed. You probably will not be teaching based on a degree from there. Freelandia Bible College

Please note, consider even legit unaccredited programs carefully in terms of your future goals. A legit unaccredited program may require a lot of work, you may learn a lot but there will be limitations in use.

In a hurry but that is all I can think of. Please disregard typos above, my key board is on its last legs.

Sorry if I messed you up. I was thinking of Nations University, not Global U. I deleted it when I realized my error, unfortunately you had already replied.

Nations offers two free master's degrees in Bible. From what I understand, they have been attempting to gain DETC accreditation. It appears that there is a bit of a holdup on that. Here's a thread that contains accreditation info http://www.degreeinfo.com/accreditation-discussions-ra-detc-state-approval-unaccredited-schools/36042-nations-u-update.html

Nations looks like a decent alternative, especially if you are getting your degree for personal fulfillment. They offer two masters: NationsUniversity - Tuition-free Online Christian Education - Graduate Programs

    Carla,

No offense, but what is exactly you're going to do with your degree? It looks like you want to study whatever free out there with no direction or goals.

Based on what you are looking for TNARS DMin may do it. I noted the link in my post above. It is large in terms of credits, work load and has some credibility (denominational recognition and so on). I would stay away from the DD. In the USA the DD is honorary. The fact that you gain entry with just a Masters and is it severely lacking in credit hours (33 for a doctorate) would make it a questionable degree to get. Those two fact may cause questions (like why does a non pastor have a DD and when you described what you did for it, it would not get better). Better one of the 102 (forgot number I saw) credit hour DMin's.

Tekman brings up a good point. What do you want to do with the degree. First, the TNARS doctorate will likely not secure you a faculty position. Second, if ordination is your goal you need to check with your denomination (REALLY IMPORTANT). This is the case because aside from accreditation and VERY important is their affiliation. Nations is Church of Christ affiliated and TNARS reformed. If you took Nations to a fundamentalist Baptist group for ordination the C of C affiliation might nix your chances. If you took TNARS to a Methodist church, same thing.

You could also consider investing a little and doing the PhD at Lousiana Baptist University. Unaccredited but has some advantages (see thread) and monthly payment plans (100 per month). Louisiana Baptist University and Theological Seminary

TNARS has about the only free doctorate with some credibility (DMin not the oddball DD program). The DMin is substantial, requires a lot of work, and I think you will have earned it if you complete the program.
