I know we have discussed here how difficult it is to secure a college teaching position in single subjects in the liberal arts and humanities. Is it just as difficult or even more so to get a college teaching job as a general humanities teacher? Would a degree such as a MLS, MLA, or the CSU HUX MA qualify for teaching the general humanities courses? Would you need a doctorate in the humanities to be competitive? My problem is that my interests are so broad that I have trouble settling on one thing. Maybe I should start a thread on the longest time taken to make a decision. I bet I would win, hands down. :yup:
With all due respect to our own dear Craniac I believe that Michael is correct. It's a dubious honor but I believe it's all yours.
I've also always been torn between practicality and passion -- what I'm passionate about, there are few jobs, and what would be practical, I hate. One thing I know: Whatever time I have left, I want to do something with meaning and purpose, and that I want to get up everyday to do. I'm tired of being a drone.
Michael, I admire your struggle. I, for one, have gone to the side of practicality. I have chosen to take a path that will allow me always to be gainfully employed, pay my bills, etc. There are reasons for that decision but they do not matter in this discussion. But still there are even times when I get to feel good about things. For example, once upon a time I welded a chunk of gold to a chunk of stainless steel using an electron beam. I was recently told that my weld remained solid throughout it's lifespan until the spaceshuttle Discovery was retired. I feel good about that. Obviously there are other choices. Whatever you choose,do it impeccably.
