I've read a significant amount on PhD programs from Pretoria on this sight, but there aren't too many recent threads/posts about Cape Town.

My dissertation would be related to counseling/community psychology... and the research interests at Pretoria seem to fall more in line with that than faculty at UTC. Still, I would like to know as much as possible about both schools.

Would anyone with experience at either or both schools be willing to comment here? How was admission, how was correspondence with your faculty adviser, etc?

    Thanks.

I think it's important to point out that neither Cape Town nor Pretoria has a distance learning program per se. Because they are both "Commonwealth Universities" they offer research oriented grad programs. Under some circumstances they may allow a student to perform this research at a distance and this is where the game gets interesting. Can you entice a Professor to support your research without ever meeting you? Can you get the school to agree that you'll never have to come to campus? (or maybe just for the oral defense?) These questions, and many more, are waaaay up in the air. I'd suggest that you apply to both (it's cheap enough) and then let the chips fall where they do.

The better school in this case is whichever one has a faculty member who shares your research interest and is willing to supervise your thesis even though you're at a distance.

I would find that faculty member before applying so they can shepherd you through the byzantine process of enrolling.

Both are rock solid universities, UCT perhaps pips Pretoria as far as renown goes.
