Hi, A high school student is looking for some online courses to start immediately. Any ideas for anything. This does not have to be used for transfer more for personal growth while waiting for the fall semester. Local CC does not have anything ready to go currently. Thanks. Hille

How about Kahn Academy? Your high school student could get ahead of the game by watching the free videos and I would suspect that, if he/she follows them closely, it would be possible to test out of a few subjects. This would be a really cheap way to go and college credit would be the result.

PS: I don't know much about CLEP and other similar tests, so I can't say for sure if this would work.

In general I would suggest the student to choose an area of interest and take an intro course. If there is no particular area of interest that stands out then I would suggest something in English Literature or World History. If a little more practicality is sought then I'd say a course in Essay Writing could be quite useful. If a little more fun is sought then I'd say take a course on the History of Cinema/Film.

    It would. Nice post.

I would like to add that Kahn Academy is also included in the downloadable material from Itunes University.

Hi, This student is already taking four AP tests so the Astronomy looks great but the price is high. All ideas greatly appreciated. Hille

I'd say ALEKS.com On ALEKS, the maths from begining algebra and up (ACE Evaluated for possible credit) are offered as well as stats. Only $20 per month! He can try this as a great intro to online learning, if he hates it, he's only out $20 but if he likes it he can earn college credit. If nothing else, he's brushing up for fall start.

I would suggest the core courses that will likely be accepted in transfer almost anywhere....Intro to Psych, Intro to Soc, English Comp 101 & 102, etc. Might as well get a head start on college while you're at it.

I was going to hold off on this comment but then I decided to just let it fly.

What's the rush? A smart HS student taking a bunch of AP courses but that's not enough? This kid's got to start college? Why not just kick back a bit? Have some fun. No friends? No other interests? Studies have shown that these superachievers don't really go any further than other people. This kid wants to graduate college at 20? And then what? Get a PhD at 24? And then what? Be president of the universe by 30? I say "Slow down. What's the rush. Pull your head out of the books for a few minutes and get to know the world."

The typical response is, "This kid is well rounded with a million friends all kinds of extra curriculars and blah and blahblahblah. My response is "40 year old with heartattack."

My own unsolicited opinion on this matter is that LIFE HAPPENS. I was done with a year of college by the end of my senior year in high school, but only now am I finally getting down to business. If I didn't get that head start, I would be much further behind.

Another option for this High School Kid is Clovis Community College. My 2 oldest both enrolled in courses there. My daughter earned enough credits at Clovis to be inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community colleges.
