Does anyone have any information on whether or not Northeastern's CPS program is reputable? I was interested in enrolling in this program but I mentioned it to a friend who strongly recommended against it.

Apparently his daughter was attending a community college during the fall 2010 semester, taking one course. She was approved for a $5500 pell grant so I'm guessing she had about $5000 left. She decided to go full-time for the spring semester at Northeastern. An enrollment coach told them that using the pell grant would be no problem. Anyway, they would not consider her grant. They wanted her to take out a loan and sign a promissary note. The school did not even let them know until after the withdrawal date had passed. They just put them off until the date expired. One of their reasons was that past the first semester the pell grant would be depleted by half and that NUs late fees would have eaten up the rest. Now they say that she owes them $5000.

He showed me the emails from the financial aid advisor and the enrollment coach and it certainly looks like they got took. You hear a lot about shady practices these days and this looked pretty bad so naturally I am wondering whether to pursue this. I have the same emails from an enrollment coach that they got.

Any info would be appreciated. BTW, they were given less than two weeks to withdraw or they would be charged for the full semester...is that possible?

    Northeastern CPS

Well, I notice nobody replied to this but...I thought I would follow up anyway. I did some internet research and found a lot of the same similar complaints. Mostly, people apply and then get an email the day before the session starts saying they've been accepted. One person got accepted the day the session started. They don't have time to contact financial aid but they usually assume that their grant (sometimes it's pell grant and sometimes it's some other kind of grant) will be fine.

Anyway, they get the run around for a few days until it's too late to withdraw and then...they are stuck for the cost of the session. I am not going sign on for this one.

Can anyone recommend an online degree completion program for IT? Any input would be appreciated.

    Thx

There are tons of threads here on Northeastern's CPS program, but the short answer is yes, it's an extremely reputable program. Financial aid issues are complicating in general and many enrollment people get it wrong.

I would have thought so too until I looked at this. Frankly, I assumed that my friend's daughter or the school had just fumbled some paper work somewhere along the line. But...the pressure to enroll from the enrollment coach, the short withdrawal period (just a few days), convinced me otherwise.

By enrollment people, do you mean the enrollment coach or the financial aid office?

    The school is ok

I am about a month away from graduating from one of the CPS MS programs. The quality of the program has been good. I paid for it myself so I never dealt with financial aid, the one time I missed the tuition payment when I was on vacation I called them afterwards and they waived the late fee. NEU has a strong reputation in academic circles, and most people have at least heard about it.
