I have started the process to attend UNISA and my head is :smashfreakB::banghead::dunno::no::hypnotized::confused: I started by picking the BA in Psyc Counciling and filling out the form at the ICIA site. But know I don't know if I can attend for that program. As I said above, I'm working with ICIA and so far it's been a lot of emailing back and forth. Here is what ICIA sent me about the Psyc degree....

Yeah... if you are still making comparisons, it seems that IGNOU has a more flexible admissions policy. I just realized that there is no way in oblivion that I would ever be able to do UNISA's MA in Linguistics program. It would require a downright ugly amount of money for me to get a degree (from anywhere) that they accept as prerequisite to that program. :(

I really think that if I spent the rest of my life doing nothing but studying UNISA's policies, I still wouldn't understand them.

I had to make a choice according to my wife or she was going to kill me. I'm in it to win it at UNISA and I will push trough and earn a BA from them. But man they have a ton of crazy little hoops to jump through, but that is what makes them a great school. They are not yielding on their entry requirements one inch. I spent a lot of time on the net reading about the programs (courses) and the classes from students, all of them said if you can make it into the school you will have a great time and learn a lot. So I have my fingers crossed. If Nelson Mandela (? ) can do it in prison I can do it in the climate controlled comfort of my home.

If you really are "in it to win it" at UNISA, the good news is, you picked a fantastic school!

    Yes I am in now.

On a side note...me and my wife were out looking at new cars and I was talking to the salesman. He told me this is his last month at work and he was going back to finish up school. We started talking about online programs and I told him I was trying to start at UNISA and he told me to follow him. We went into the finance guy’s office and on the wall was a huge diploma from UNISA. This had to be the biggest thing I have ever seen! What are the odds? I took it as an omen. That and I bought me a new Toyota!

I am very interested in UNISA too... but doing a bit of research about their academic standing in the world (& South Africa), they come up as 8th in South Africa and 720th in the world. Would there be a way to find out if there are any comparable US universities to make the decision process easier? 720 is a huge number.

There is over 12000 degree granting institutions in the world. I’m just curious, 720 is a huge number in what way?

I looked into bachelors programs at UNISA a while back (MC - the BA in Linguistics!). Anyway, like the BA in Linguistics, the Bachelor of Psychology is an honors degree (4th year). You need to have a three year BA to qualify for admission to this program. I don't believe that an associates degree will cut it here. So, if you're willing to pursue the three year BA Health Sciences and Social Services degree through UNISA, (and do well), then you should be in good shape to qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Psychology program. Please note, that unless you are planning on moving to South Africa, this degree will not qualify you to become a psychologist.

I'm just curious, who takes "world rankings" seriously? Who has the authority to decide which school ranks higher than another? Certainly no authority that I recognize. Therefore, here is my list:

    1. Excelsior College
    2. UNISA
    3. MUST University
    4. Harvard University
    5. The London Institute of Applied Research

There. UNISA is ranked second in the world, behind only Excelsior

I've always found mapquest and google maps to be most helpful. Otherwise you'll need to ask a more specific question.

You know... you're right. I feel much better now after seeing my current univ's ranking. However, I am still curious as to what US university might be comparable to.

No one takes them seriously because the criteria are nebulous.

For people in the know... is there a shot that a UNISA degree, with foreign credential evaluation, could land one into an American graduate program in Psychology?

According to the site, to do the Honours BA in Linguistics, one must first have a BA in either Linguistics, Communicative Disorders or a language. :(
