large Has anyone used Excelsiors Guided Learning Packages for thier exams, and did you find them helpful, not worth the money, etc...? Thx!

    Yes ... I've used them.

The helpfulness depends on the course. The nice part about them is that everything you need is "in the box" and that everything you get is taylored for the course. Preparing for the test is as simple as following the dotted lines.

I really enjoyed the "religions of the world" package and one other one. (For the life of me I can't remember what that one was!) <-- I'll see if I can find it later by reviewing my transcript.

The downside of course is cost. Those guided learning packets are expensive.

So .. if you have substantial knowledge of the subject matter already, or if you know where to obtain it then the cost may not be worth it. If you want things to be easier, or if you really have a passion for the subject then investing in the package may in fact be worth it.

(Not sure if this helps you or not)

    Good luck.

It most certainly is helpful! Thx so much. Yea, I noticed the prices myself, but a helluva lot cheaper when compared with trad. courses.
Religions of the World is one I want to take, btw, so thanks again for the input.:)

    Religions of the World

    Hi Ellen,

I took the DANTES Introduction to World Religions exam. I had considered taking the Excelsior offering, but found that the DANTES exam was considerably less expensive. I was able to prepare for the exam by borrowing a college textbook from my local library. FWIW.

    Good Luck!

I had used the Regents Exam packet to prepare for the Regent's Exam. I then decided (due to cost) to do what Tony did and I took the Dantes.

The material is identical between the Regents exam and the DANTES. The difference is format: Regents requires three essays and the DANTES is a multiple choice exam.

(BTW: If you have ANY questions about ROTW please let me know ... I loved that course ... )

The other Regents Exam course that I liked was "History of Nazi Germany". I don't think that exam is offered any more however.

I actually see the Nazi Germany still listed.
Thats GREAT to know about the difference in test format. I'm not lazy, but I'll take mult.choice any day! The mere thought of the word essay makes me nervous (so naturally I'm worried about the Eng.Comp).
Religions...I just may have future inquiries for ya.
    :) The subject fascinates me.
    Thx again!

    Anytime. The offer remains open.

I was wrong ... the Nazi Germany test didn't go away. It was the History of the Vietnam War exam that went away. (Got an "A" on that one BTW). That was also a fun class. (It had a big section on Vietnamese culture which tied in well with some of the Asian Studies courses that I had taken in my undergrad years. It also tied in well with the Asian religions section (Buddhism) of the ROTW exam.)

    Good luck!
