    Esteemed colleagues;

    Effective yesterday, I have resigned from NCU. I advised them I would return when I completed my lit review (estimated 2 months). I could not see paying them tuition for a course (1st dissertation course) where I would be essentially just performing research. Since there is no more LOA, I had no alternative.

    I tried to enroll in the next course (a repeat of the first course) but was told I only had a 21 day interval. I knew that I would not make this timeline, and even a 28 day interval was pushing it.

    The DIS sequence is now so accellerated that I fear quality may suffer, or even more learners will drop out - permanently.

    BTW, wWhen I explained this to my AA, she basically said "OK" and dropped me from the school. No regrets expressed, no "let's work this out somehow", or "did you speak with your Chair?"....However, she did say that I could come back.

    Other students have resigned from the school and have reported back the same attitude of indifference. I only have two more classes, so I will persevere, but I will do it my way.

    I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. I hope they don't give you resistance about getting back in. It seems like they have redesigned the dis process in a manner where they can extract more money from you, rather than a manner that will help you get through it. It's as though they expect you to drop and have found a way to get you to pay the most before you do.

    I took a few classes in the business PhD program there and sensed exactly what you are saying. I decided that I would cut my losses early and move to a different school.

    I thought once you leave the program, you cannot come back unless you request administrative leaves or something.

    Wow, so they are basically MUST University, but with accreditation.

    LOL. You MUST be correct. I think anyone that makes it through their program deserves a gold medal. I understand it wasn't this way in the past, but they seem to have become almost anti-student.

    I did not think the DIS sequence was accelerated. I thought they were still 16 week classes. For what it is worth, I made it through in the 3 DIS classes and the only 30 day extention was due to their error. It is possible.

    I am genuinely sorry about your situation. I hope you get a satisfactory offer from another school to complete your PHD. In my irrational exuberance to pursue a PHD, I lost almost $10K at NCU. I was bitter for a while but I was able to make peace with myself. I won’t be surprise if in the near future B&Ms start targeting disgruntled online students.

    Sorry, but...NCU?
    dis = distance, or dissertation?
    "...no more LOA"?

    Personally I would complete the program with only two classes to go.

    !6 wk vs 12 Week DIS courses

    Randell, the DIS courses are 12 weeks now with 21 days in between each of them. They say 28 days, but it is really three weeks.

    Dis = dissertation
    DL = distance learning
    LOA = leave of absence

    All of this jargon can get confusing, I know. :smile:

    Just don't go DOA on us!

    Listen, I would not advise anyone to start NCU at this point but I would not recommend you drop at this point. You have to much invested. I can offer some advice and help if you wish. Just PM me.

    You should contact the Dean. I can't imagine that they would let you stop paying and then re-enter the program whenever you want. Are you sure you are a PhD Candidate if you don't have an approved proposal? Normally, for-profit schools get upset when you don't pay them... That is a concept they understand. The underlying problem is that they probably think they are entitled to tuition money even though they are doing anything for the student... :)

    You do way more then research, you continue to build your paper with the research that is done.

    You should join my school...Cyrus Rhodes University....j/k

    You should complete your degree, it is not a good idea to drop when you're only 2 more classes to go.

    This is typical though. Every school that I'm aware of, even B&M, charge you "research credits" while you are in the dissertation phase. Don't know what NCU gives you for it, but at most places this pays for library usage, online journal and database access, computer lab access, and other things.

    I am reminded of chapter 6 in my favorite graduate school guide, "Playing The Game" titled "Nobody Cares About Your Degree." (Yes, that is the actual chapter title.)

    To summarize, nobody cares about your degree. Not your AA, not your chair, nor your committee, not the university, not even your family. They may want to see you succeed, but this is your degree, not theirs.

    Correspondence from the school:

    Hello Connie,

    Understanding your decision, I will use this correspondence to process your request with the Registrar. Please be advised that in the event that you are able to return to your studies, there will be no readmission fees. However, the courses completed will be evaluated based on the requirements of the catalog in place at the time of your return.

    I hope that you will find the time to resume your studies in the near future.

    Best regards,
    Olivia Thomas

    Olivia

    I would like to resign from the College for 12 weeks. I will not be done with my literature review by 14 February. I need a little more time. If I enroll in this DIS course again, I will not be able to complete it and will be faced with other penalties.

    I have been paying for 3 semester hours of dissertation research for the last year and half at Valdosta State. Other than emails back and forth with my Chair, I have been on my own. This is standard practice in any doctoral program.
