So I have been dragging my feet over the past 6 months or so making up excuses why this school or that school won't work for me.

So yesterday I found that Liberty U. offered a BS in Accounting - which is what I want to do. With today being my 34th birthday, I need to get focused and move forward with this. I can pick apart all schools if I really wanted to and in the end, it would just be me making up excuses to not go to school.

I am unemployed and only have about a dozen credits started from a local community college. So I have a long road ahead.

Does anybody have any insight on Liberty's BS in accounting. I would hate to complete this degree and not be ready for a career in accounting or even sitting on the CPA exam.

Also, I noticed that Liberty gives credits for life experiences. I noticed the one experience they specifically mentioned on there website was Real Estate Agent. Well I was a Real Estate agent for a few years and gave up my licence 3 years ago because the market was so bad. How would a person get credit for this. Would I just show them proof of my licence or would I have to take tests to prove that I have knowledge in Real Estate.

Thanks for all the help. Ken

    Hi Ken,

Don't worry about being 34; it's never too late to start your education. Let's say you will be finished when you are 38. You will still be 38 in four years whether you get your degree or not. The only difference will be this: Will you be 38 with a degree in accounting or will you be 38 without one? Take it from someone who is almost 20 years your senior and working on a doctorate at Liberty.

As far as answering your questions about qualifying for the CPA exam and for credit for life experiences, although there is a possibility that someone here might know something, you can easily find the information you want with a quick phone call to the admissions staff at Liberty. They have been very helpful and friendly to me every time I have called.

I think you are making a good choice studying accounting. Although the entry level jobs might not pay that well, there is good upside potential and solid prospects for future employment.

    RE: the CPA exam...

Most states require 150 credit hours to sit for the CPA. You will not likely reach this threshold with just a BS. Many CPA hopefuls pursue an MS in Accountancy after the BS to meet the requirement while also getting a master's degree (which, with the CPA, can be very helpful in obtaining adjunct teaching positions). If you want to continue, LU offers this degree as well.

So I just got off of the phone with Liberty U., and I am now a student and will start classes Feb. 14th. I am excited about this. All the excuses I have made over the past few months, I feel really good about this school.

I do have a question that really does not apply to my schooling. What exactly is an MBA. I know it's a masters degree in business--but is an MBA a specific masters major or is any masters degree in business considered an MBA. Like if I received a masters in accounting; would that be considered an MBA in accounting.

MBA = Master of Business Administration ... it's a degree which usually covers a little of everything (ex, marketing, accounting, finance, organizational behavior, etc). It's probably the most widely recognized business degrees. Sometimes MBAs will have a concentration (ex, MBA in Accounting).

But that isn't the same as a MSc in Accounting. A MSc degree is usually much more focused, so I would think that for a practical accounting job or a teaching job, they'd probably be more likely to want to hire someone with a MSc in Accounting than an MBA (with some accounting). On the other hand, for a manager type job, they may prefer the MBA. (This is informed speculation on my part, based primarily on what I've read here and from talking with friends who are in the field.)

How are things after more than a year? Still liking it? I am considering their graduate accounting degree.

    Thanks!
