    Hello

I'm looking to do a doctoral degree in leadership ... I've been doing some research and based on my need for flexibility due to work travel I'm looking at online programs.

The three noted above look good ... but I'm interested in seeing what others with experience have with them. How rigourous are they? How well respected are they, etc.

Being Canadian its really hard to know.

    Many thanks

I sent inquiries to all three a few months ago. I received "full" responses from IndanaTech and Northeastern and a "partial" (incomplete) response from GCU.

    (1) Of the three, Northeastern has the longest-running program (several years); both IndianaTech's and GCU's are practically brand new (a year);

    (2) IndianaTech's and Northeastern's are HYBRID programs; the offerings are NOT 100% online -- you will have to fly down from Canada for the butt-in-the-seat residencies (the number of required days isn't that bad, though). IndianaTech, if I recall correctly, requires a minimum of four classroom days in July; dissertation-related presentations (such as the proposal defense and the defense of the final work) require additional on-campus arrangements. Northeastern requires a minimum of 2 courses done on campus -- these may be taken during the summer, which allows for physical presence to be shortened to 7 days (the rest of the summer coursework may be done online). GCU did not address my question about on-campus attendance.

    (3) Of the three, Northeastern has the best overall institutional reputation (a highly respected, nationally-ranked private university). IndianaTech is a relatively "small and quiet" not-for-profit private college, while GCU, a for-profit institution, takes pride in being a "top ten online Christian college."

    (4) Of the three, Northeastern also has the most affordable program (under $30,000).

I hope this helps somewhat; I'm sure others who have direct experience or more info will chime in...

I just started at Indiana Tech. They have a small residency requirement. Only 2-3 days sometime in July. I think they also said the residency requirement was available twice a year in case people could not make the July date. That's what sold me. The administrators in the program have been great thus far. Though I haven't physically met any students, ppl seem to be satisfied with the program since it's inception. Like the poster said above, Indiana Tech is a small brick and mortar college with dorms and all.

    Be interested, then. :)

They should be, so I added them.

Thanks for the info on Indiana ... how much writing is there? Which stream are you in Organizational Management or Adacademic Administration? I'm much more interested in the OM as I'm NOT in the education sector. How strong is the education flavour?

I've asked the question to Student Services at Northeastern as they seem to have a strong education sector focus and while the school I attended for my M.Ed. had that I'm not sure I want it for my doctorate work as it IS extra work to link it to my "world".

BTW its cold here in Ontario. What part of Alaska are you? I have a dear friend in Anchorage and visited there 2 years ago ... it is BEAUTIFUL beyond words!

Remember - I am brand new, so I really cannot give you a valid answer on writing. I do plan to talk to more students about it as soon as I get more settled. So far, the amount of writing seems average. I am doing the Org. Management concentration as I think it's neutral enough for both academia and business. I would prefer to do Education though.

Thanks again gsutiger2 - I got a response from Ken Rauch to some questions I had and I have to say Indiana is really looking like the one I'm going to choose. I'm talking to my boss on Thursday to see what kind of support I can get for the program ... wish me luck!

Who knows ... we might even meet in July :D

I haven't met Ken in person, but I really enjoyed my interview with him. The information he provided was very good. The Indiana Tech program was my first choice. Once a year short residency and small classes really interested me. Good luck with everything.

I think it was on the ASQ website that reported that some Indiana PhD courses are heavy on math and that the program limited openings - at least for the quality systems option.

Indiana Tech's Phd program is not heavy on math. I think only 1-2 classes. One being statistics.

I was thinking that too ... I can't say I'm looking forward to stats ... hopefully it'll be how to USE the information vs how to CALCULATE the information. I had 2 stats courses in my MBA ... not exactly where my expertise lies :p

I was talking about the quality systems option - it requires 6 units of statistics as a prerequisite then courses 702, 703, 811, and 812 for another 12 units. But if you understand statistics it should not be a major hurdle.
I deal with quality related issues often and I believe this degree option would land you a 6-figure income (of course combined with appropriate experience).

Did you look into Bellevue University's program in Human Capital Managent? It seem interesting. Tell me what you think compared to Indiana Tech (IT) PhD in Global Leadership/Org. Mgt. Which university did you finally enrolled in? How do you like it?
