Tom Nixon wrote in a recent post that the new DegreeInfo format would make "life on here" much easier. I like Tom's phrase.

LIFE ON HERE! I wonder how many posters, as well as lurkers, are addicted to DegreeInfo?

Consider the symptoms of "DA" or DegreeInfo Addiction:

    1. Visit DegreeInfo and/or post every day.
    2. Do the above several times daily.
    3. Catch yourself thinking about a post while commuting to work.
    4. Get irritated when you see school advertisements in USA Today--Ph.D.'s for $199.
    5. When you visit the Outback Steakhouse you find yourself thinking of Peter Tucker and George Brown.
    6. Everytime you pass an 18 Wheeler on the Interstate you think of Steve Levicoff.
    7. Often have difficulty sleeping because of formulating a response to a particular thread.
    8. Everytime you enter an office (physician, lawyer, etc.) you examine his/her diploma for legitimacy.
    9. You pray for John Bear to have 20 more productive years, so the degree mill industry can continue to be exposed.
    10. You often have nightmares of standing before a large audience, giving a great speech, and then seeing the audience begin to laugh because your Ph.D. is from a degree mill.

I think I need to go see my family doctor. :D

I agree. I just found this site a few days ago and every day I can't wait to check back and see what is going on. Someone should get a jump start with their topic for a Ph.D dissertation on how this site effects the minds of its readers.

    The Criterion for Addiction

I note that as I write this, I have posted 180 messages to the board, while Russell has posted 1,211 messages.

Notwithstanding that this makes Russell a senior member while I am only a plain old member, I have to admit that I am comfortable with my addiction level. :D

It does beg a rhetorical question . . . If Enrique you-know-who were to post, would he be a senor* member?

I think of it as a healthy addiction. :)

Hi! My name is me again and I like to read about distance learning, but I don't have an addiction or a problem with it like the rest of you. ;)

    Let's add one:

You've been away from your computer for several days, and you tell your wife you must catch up on the board before you get too far behind! :D

On another note, my first child was born last week. No, I did not leave the hospital to catch up on this board, so perhaps I am not addicted yet! :)

Hi, my name is David and I'm a DA -- and I don't mean District Attorney. I only visit the site 4-5 times per day.

Of course you can ask if it is an addiction if it is beneficial. So the point of reading the board daily would be no different then reading the newspaper daily. (Of course I have been reading the board on daily were I only read the paper a couple times a week) :D

I guess I have a small addiction. For example, last week a new director of engineering was announced here at work. In the announcement it was mentioned that he had a PhD and the title of his dissertation sounded like it might be too general.

For my own good I must ignore ... Anyone know a good web link to DAI? (Hay, I'm weak. :p )

Except the material one finds in an average daily newspaper contains little, if any, useful information, whereas this board contains a lot of useful information.

Actually, Steve, you should be a senior member and I the junior member. Given the fact that it was after reading your book (1993) Name It Frame It that I became interested in this whole subculture of DL, degree mills, accreditation, etc.

BTW, your picture looks nice, but I would have thought you had more hair than that. :D

Well, I will have to crank up my rate of posting so that I can get a promotion to Commander, Captain or even Commodore, instead of plain old "junior member."

    :D

Well I must be an addict -- I just got home from teaching a class and ready to hit the hay. However, I logged onto degreeinfo first and I am still here....Is there no hope!

I am not quite that bad yet. I just had a new son born on 1/31. I only logged on to degreeinfo between hospital visits. :)

Congratulations! I know the feeling, I had boy/girl twins born on 10/17/01, and when I finally got to go home from the hospital after 30+ hours, I just had to check in here before I collapsed into bed.

The addiction notion did cross my mind, as I logged in from the only internet cafe in Kyzyl, Tuva last summer...

Now when you're doing this, does Marina just smile and humor you? I've been married long enough that my wife has figured out that I'm a little...off, shall we say... so little I do amazes here anymore.

I'm not addicted. This is a hobby. Like herion to Keith Richards, extra-marital sex to Bill Clinton, and assaulting people in public to Mike Tyson. Hobbies, all hobbies, I say!

Rich Douglas, who can quit at any time.
