tell me this is a total waste of money

I posted in the washout thread, but I'm done with premed. Long story short, physics kicked my butt.

So, I have a lot of loose science credit. I'm starting nursing school, and so some of it will be used in that degree....but I have this strange "you can't have unused credit" thing that might cost me another $4500. I'm 5 courses shy of another BA.

So, I could enroll in the next 2 TESC terms and be done before I start the RN program in the fall. I would complete 5 courses at TESC and roll my premed/unused credits into another bachelor's degree (BA Natural Science/Math).

That's a total waste of time and money right? I know it is, I just need to hear it before I walk away from the credit.

I *could enroll in one of my fantasy grad programs....but then I'd have to finish while in nursing school because an unfinished degree isn't worth anything either.

I could do nothing. :shocked1: lol Not likely.

Go for it! If you get sick of nursing you could teach math (K-12 w/ cert).

Why not finish nursing school and go back for another BA later?

So, what you are saying is...

You are driving down a long road and have reached the point where the directions say to turn right, but you decide to keep going straight, because you notice a sign that tells you that the dead end is only a mile ahead?

I say go for it - but I suggest obtaing a BA if you have BS degree or vice versa - I think it looks better on a rewume (ie you are educated in both the arts and the sciences - although not always true). Can you get CLEP/DSST credits to speed your way theough 15 units?

    Duh, wait . . .what?

Someone reads entirely too much Henry Thoreau, lol.

Ok, I'll bite. This is a total waste of time and money.

Why not take the next six months and just enjoy being with your family before the stress of nursing school starts up? Many of my high school (class of '93 - w00t!) friends are returning / have returned to school to study nursing, and I never hear them complain about all the free time they have. I earned 146 credits on the way to my BSBA, and I assure you that while there are things that keep me up at night, wondering what I'm going to do with the extra 26 credits on my transcript is not one of them. Those credits are a sunk cost to me - I can't get the money I spent on them back, and the money that I would spend to make use of them wouldn't be an optimal use of my resources. As Dante said in Clerks, "sometimes you gotta let those hard-to-reach chips go." Well, maybe that quote isn't perfectly apt, but hey...

Seriously, bank the cash you'd spend on another TESC degree in case of a rainy day, have a good time with your family for the next few months, and don't look back. Start your nursing program in the fall, and kick butt. Best of luck to you!

I think that Fortunato has made a good point. Why not stick those credits in the fridge for a while. I hear that they keep for a good long time.

No. I don't like teaching children. *sorry, it's the truth.

LOL, yes, I'm planning on that....but then it'll be either the bridge program or a BSN. These BA credits won't count in those degrees.

No Maniac, that's not what I'm saying because until I've had more coffee, I'm not even sure what you're saying. Or asking. Is the second BA the sign telling me to turn right, or the dead end sign? On second thought, how about I just place a funny emoticon and we call it done lol? :Eyecrazy:

My first BA is in social sciences, this would be natural sciences - so they are totally different. The 5 classes I would need are all upper level, I would take elsewhere and transfer back. I underestimated the cost by at least another $2500. I forgot about the TESC enrollment fee!

You are right. I know this. I know it's going to be crazy-demanding in a few short months, I was just trying to repair the past year. I could have finished this before starting, and I knew trying to do another program (grad school) at the same time would have been a BAD idea. Thanks you. This is what I should do.

Yeah. You guys are right. I knew this, I think that's why I posted. I knew it was a waste of money, I just needed to hear everyone else say it lol.

I'm glad you decided it was a waste because it most definitely is!

...ESPECIALLY if you are planning to do another bachelor's degree down the road in nursing.

The only thing crazier than 3 master's degrees is 3 bachelor's degrees.

If your goal is nursing school, yes, I'd call it a waste of time and money. Maniac Craniac's analogy is right on the nose, and Kizmet's right that those credits aren't going anywhere.

Something to keep in mind about the philosophy that you'll come back later is that TESC will not award a third bachelor degree, and I would imagine most other schools would be the same. So, if you're going to pursue a BSN that will likely limit what you can do afterwards with those extra credits.

I'm with everyone else here. It's a waste. Loose ends don't always feel good. But for now, devote your energy to more productive endeavors.

I can't add anything of substance so I'll just wish you good luck in nursing school! What are your plans so far for that. DL options or are you going B&M? Maybe in your free time you can map out your path for others to use. You are one of the better DL proponents Jennifer, and you are always a great help for others.

My suggestion would have been to take the money you were going to spend on the degree and take a trip! Blow off some steam somewhere! :D

    Jen,

I'm going to echo the consensus. Take a break - enjoy the time with the hubby and kids, and then gear up for Nursing School. You'll be busy enough when that time comes...
