I have decided to get my PhD from UNISA. Looking at their web site you are required to take at least two years to complete the PhD. The first year you must do the research proposal and publish a peer reviewed article, and the second year then you can complete your dissertation (you have five years). This makes a lot of sense for me, because I have already taken all the research courses and even the comprehensive examination at Northcentral University (NCU), I even have a current concept paper that I can use for the dissertation proposal at UNISA. I know the registration process will be challenging, but looking forward, I have few questions for this forum:

How is the PhD process at UNISA? What are the milestones and reviews required by UNISA? I will appreciate information on the process from current or former UNISA students or staff.

And how many 4s will you accrue in that time?

Why use IACI instead of just dealing with UNISA directly?
Don't you have to pay 'the middle man' his cut? So, what's the advantage; what do I gain?

Faster, easier, less hassle. Best move I made. Trust me on this one.

Had you gone ahead without their services and encountered difficulties, so you then went with them?

Side issue - Coming 2012 selected DCOM etc will be replace by PHD. It's a great move for comparability and marketability.

In that IACI is the appointed international licensee (e.g. Broker) – University's Licensee in Canada to represent the school (UNISA) outside of South-Africa and as the University's Licensee for U.S. students… attempting to go direct is highly likely to be a very difficult task. Either way, IACI should /would get credit /its fee for the enrollment as per agreement between UNISA and its representative /broker firm; you may as well use them.

Per the agreement, IACI has been appointed by UNISA to:

Serve students on behalf of UNISA
Advise prospective students concerning their curriculum for Postgraduate and Undergraduate studies
Provide administrative support during and after the registration process
    Provide assistance with foreign exchange.
Provide University Authorized Examination Centers during the academic year.

Thanks, major. I didn't realize IACI would get a 'cut' from UNISA regardless of whether a student uses their services or registers with UNISA directly. I thought it was more like a 'travel agent,' who doesn't make a cut if you book your own flights.

    Thanks for clarifying.

    nanoose,

I can’t imagine this isn’t the mutual business agreement (e.g. not a finders-fee /bird-dog position as with travel agencies).

Nope, started out with them. I heard too many horror stories about how slow they could be.

Yes I do. I have been teaching there for 6 years. I used to teach for Tomball College before that.

No, again the nightmares I heard about them being slow prompted me to go with Dr Esselen and his group. Your mileage may vary on this one. I know some folks on here that went the route of applying directly to UNISA. I know some folks that went through Dr Esselen and his group. I stand by the fact that Dr Esselen and his group cleared through the layers of fat, as it were, and got me in. I will tell you it took me 1 year to get in. This is the history department. I cannot speak for other departments.

Not to keep jacking op's thread but I went to Tomball College for a while. I was asking about HCC because my wife was thinking about doing their LVN to RN program and we had trouble finding info on it.

Look at Coleman College. That is where the medical fields are.
