On behalf of a a friend of mine, I would like to ask the masses about the Business Administration concentrations from Columbia College. Which of these would yield the most interest in the job market? What would an employer most want to see?

    Thanks!

I'd say Human Resources Management. That is a field that is steadily growing in popularity

I could not find a list of concentrations on the Columbia website (at least for the DL option) but I believe the HR option is the worst option for job opportunities. I know my last big company HR was virtually eliminated by switching to a computerized system using Monster

The best choice really depends on where you live (or want to live) and the business areas that interest you. For example if you wanted to work for a company involved with international business (e.g. an airline or Wallmart) then an international business concentration might be a good choice.

Accounting, if the path leads to CPA (probably w/post-bac coursework). A non-business undergrad major (with a numerical focus) and a MBA.

A degree is only part of the hiring process. In these times some work experience is good to have whether it be a job in a fast food joint or volunteer work. Being smart and aware is also key (did the job seeker do any research on the company that is interviewing him or does he uses their products/services).

This person is extremely intelligent, interviews very well and never seems to have trouble getting jobs. All that is left in the equation is a degree. This person already has an AA in Business and would like to move on to a BS in Business.

HR is not just hiring and firing that is a missconception that people seem to believe universally. HR managers are EEO managers, osha reps, workforce quality control, compensation and benefits representatives, and a slew of other responsibilities.

I believe within the confines of the current business job market environment, the BA /BS in accounting as far as initial, most immediate entry into the workforce utilizing one’s academic concentration area. Of course, further advancement toward obtaining the CPA would ultimately best serve the bachelor-level degree holder.

Anyone who possesses a business degree with a focus in accounting, from my observations, tend to yield the most job prospects after graduation. EVERYONE needs accountants.
